NC's Abdul Rahim Rather elected J-K Assembly Speaker

Veteran National Conference leader and seven-time MLA from Charar-e-Sharief Abdul Rahim Rather was on Monday elected the first speaker of the legislative assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Leader of the House and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Rather (80) was a "natural choice" for the post due to his vast experience. He said Rather has earlier raised the dignity of the House in various capacities, and as the custodian of the House now, "we expect you to do justice with all members".

EC orders immediate transfer of Maharashtra DGP

Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls, the Election Commission on Monday directed the state government to transfer DGP Rashmi Shukla with immediate effect following complaints from political parties, including the Congress, sources said. The poll body directed the Maharashtra chief secretary to hand over Shukla's charge to the next senior-most IPS officer in the cadre. The chief secretary was also directed to send a panel of three IPS officers by Tuesday afternoon for appointment as DGP, the sources said.

Maharashtra Assembly elections: BJP rebel Gopal Shetty announces withdrawal of nomination

Senior leader and former MP Gopal Shetty, who had filed nomination as an independent after the BJP denied ticket to him, on Monday announced withdrawal of his candidature from Borivali assembly seat in Mumbai. The BJP has nominated Sanjay Upadhyay from the Borivali seat for the November 20 state assembly polls.
Monday is the last day for withdrawing nominations.
