Violence rocks Assam's Samaguri ahead of bypolls
Incidents of violence rocked Assam's Samaguri assembly constituency where by-elections will be held on November 13 with both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress alleging that gunshots were fired targeting each other's supporters over the last 24 hours, police said on Sunday. It was also alleged that three journalists who went to cover the violence, which happened on Saturday, were manhandled by Congress supporters.
Encounter on outskirts of Srinagar, terrorists believed to be trapped
Two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped in an encounter with security forces in Zabarwan forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar city on Sunday, officials said here. The gunbattle broke out around 9 am in the forest area connecting Dachigam and upper reaches of Nishat area here, they said. The security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in the area following information about presence of terrorists there.
Jharkhand: West Singhbhum ensures home voting for elderly in assembly polls
The West Singhbhum district administration has ensured home voting for many elderly voters in assembly elections in Jharkhand, officials said. Elections to the 81-member assembly are scheduled on November 13 and 20. Five seats falling in the district -- Chaibasa, Majhgaon, Jagannathpur, Manoharpur and Chakradharpur will go to polls in the second phase. Home voting, however, was held on November 3, 4, 9 and is being conducted today as well.
Encounter in J-K's Kishtwar, Army personnel injured
An Army personnel was injured on Sunday in a gunfight with terrorists in a remote forest area in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The encounter broke out in Keshwan forests when the joint search parties of the Army and police intercepted hiding terrorists around 11 am, they said. They said the operation in the forests of Kuntwara and Keshwan was going on since Thursday evening following killing of two village defence guards.

MLA's son claims he was kidnapped; cops register case against 4 persons
Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly polls, NCP (SP) MLA Ashok Pawar's son has alleged he was kidnapped by a group of persons who demanded Rs 10 crore from him, police said. The police on Saturday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against three men and a woman in this connection, they said. The accused allegedly asked Rushiraj Pawar, the son of the Shirur MLA in Pune district, to come with them for a meeting with some persons who wanted to join the NCP (SP), as per the FIR.
Fraud detection system saves public assets worth Rs 2,500 cr: Scindia
The technical system deployed by the government is blocking 13.5 mn fraud calls daily and has helped save people's assets worth Rs 2,500 crore till date, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia has said. The minister, in an interview, said most of the spam calls originate from servers outside the country, and the systems have been able to block the majority of such fraudulent calls.
Two held for Sikh activist's murder in Punjab
Two members of Canada-based gangster-turned terrorist Arsh Dalla's gang, who were allegedly involved in the murder of a Sikh activist last month, have been arrested from Kharar in Mohali, a top Punjab Police officer said on Sunday. The accused were also involved in the murder of another person in Madhya Pradesh.
Russia's First Deputy PM Denis Manturov to visit India for key discussions on economic cooperation
Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister, Denis Manturov, is set to visit India on November 11-12, as part of a working trip aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Manturov will participate in the plenary session of the Russian-Indian Business Forum in Mumbai on November 11, where the focus will be on expanding economic and business cooperation between the two nations, the Russian Embassy in India stated.
24% deaths recorded in Delhi occurred due to infectious, parasitic diseases: Report
A Delhi government report has attributed nearly 24 percent of the total about 89,000 deaths registered in the national capital in 2023 to infectious and parasitic diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, tuberculosis and hepatitis B, among others. The Medical Certification of Cause of Deaths (MCCD) Report 2023, issued by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics of Delhi government, said around 21,000 people died due to infectious and parasitic diseases out of total 88,628 institutional deaths.
