Doordarshan to screen 4K restored version of 'Manthan' as tribute to Shyam Benegal

National broadcaster Doordarshan on Tuesday announced that it will ring in the new year by screening the 4K restored version of Shyam Benegal's film "Manthan" as homage to the veteran filmmaker. Benegal, the pioneer of the parallel cinema movement in Indian cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, died on December 23 at a hospital here due to chronic kidney disease. He was 90.

Russian missile, drone attack on Ukraine hits multiple targets, including Kyiv

Russia launched an aerial attack on Ukraine on Tuesday, striking the capital and other regions with multiple missiles and drones. Ukraine's air force reported a ballistic missile threat at 3 am, with at least two explosions heard in Kyiv minutes later. Another missile alert was issued at 8 am followed by at least one explosion in the city.

CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan defends parole decision in high-profile murder case

CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan on Tuesday defended the parole granted to Kodi Suni, a convict in the 2012 T P Chandrasekharan murder case, saying prisons are reform centres and that parole can be given even to those convicted of serious crimes. Reacting to media reports critical of the decision to grant parole to Suni, CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan said it was following a complaint filed by Sunil's mother with the Human Rights Commission that the prison department was asked to consider whether parole could be granted on humanitarian grounds.

ITR filing deadline extended for revised return

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the deadline for resident individuals to register their belated or revised  Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2024-25. The deadline has now been pushed to January 15, 2025.

SpaDeX satellites first to be built by industry on its own: Isro official

The launch of two satellites for the space docking experiment (SpaDeX) also marked a first for the industry, which built the two spacecraft on their own under guidance from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) engineers.The two satellites -- SDX01 (chaser) and SDX02 (target) -- each weighing 220 kg were integrated and tested by Ananth Technologies Limited (ATL), which has been associated with a number of Isro projects for the past several years. "So far, large satellites have not been realised in the industry by themselves. This is the first time that the two satellites have been integrated and tested in the industry," said U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) Director M Shankaran.

After vowing to "go to war" to defend the H-1B visa programme, tech billionaire Elon Musk has reignited debates surrounding the programme used to bring skilled foreign workers to the US by labelling it "broken" and in urgent need of "major reform."  "The reason I'm in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H-1B," Musk last week wrote on X. Musk, however, appeared to retract his earlier statement in response to a post by an X user who said America needed to be a destination for the world's most "elite talent" but argued the current H-1B system was not the solution.

Maharashtra asks transport department to use AI for road safety measures

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the state transport department officials to employ the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in order to minimise road accidents.
