Delhi minister urges LG to crack down on illegal sale of firecrackers ahead of Diwali

Amid rising pollution concerns and with Diwali just three days away, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has written to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena urging immediate action against those involved in the illegal sale and distribution of firecrackers. The Delhi government had earlier issued a directive on October 14, banning the manufacturing, storage, sale and bursting of all types of firecrackers in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi until January 1, 2025.

Ex-Karnataka HC judge K S Puttaswamy, lead petitioner in privacy case, passes away

Former Karnataka High Court judge Justice K S Puttaswamy, who played a pivotal role in declaration of right to privacy as a fundamental right from the Supreme Court in 2017, passed away at his Bengaluru residence on Monday. He was 98. Justice Puttaswamy was the lead petitioner who had moved the apex court in 2012 challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme as being violative of the privacy right. The Aadhaar scheme subsequently received legislative sanction.

Cong seeks all-party meet to get clarity on whether census would include enumeration of castes

The Congress today sought an all-party meeting to get clarity on whether the next census would include a detailed enumeration of all castes and whether the census will be used for determining the strength of each state in the Lok Sabha. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the extension of the tenure of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner has been notified and it means that the long-delayed Census that was due in 2021 will finally be conducted soon.

Bar Council of India removes 107 'fake' lawyers from its roll in Delhi

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has removed names of 107 fake lawyers from its roll between 2019 and October 2024 in Delhi as a part of its ongoing drive to maintain "integrity and professionalism". "This decisive action is aimed at eliminating fake advocates and those who no longer meet the standards of legal practice. By doing so, the BCI has tried to continue to protect the public's trust and the legal system itself from unethical practices," read a BCI statement on October 26.

Delhi court to decide on Engineer Rashid's bail in terror funding on Nov 19

A Delhi court would likely pronounce on November 19 its order on a bail plea of Lok Sabha MP from J&K's Baramulla, Engineer Rashid, in an alleged case of terror funding. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh, who was scheduled to pass the order on Monday, adjourned the matter. The judge had on September 10 granted interim bail to Sheikh Abdul Rashid, alias Engineer Rashid, to enable him to campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections while deferring the order on his regular bail plea.

PM Modi to inaugurate AIIMS Bhopal extension building, drone service on Oct 29

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Tuesday virtually inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal's new extension building and also launch its drone service facility, an official said on Monday. The AIIMS extension "Kautilya Bhavan" is a modern six-storey building covering an area of 11,900 square metres, with a project cost of Rs 64.44 crore.

Opposition members walk out of Waqf panel meet

Various Opposition members walked out of the meeting of the Joint Committee on Waqf Amendment Bill on Monday, protesting against the presentation made by the Delhi Waqf board. Opposition members claimed that the Delhi Waqf Board administrator, who had appeared before the Committee, made changes to the presentation without the knowledge of the Delhi government.

Notices issued to farmers over Waqf land to be withdrawn, says Karnataka law minister

After claims were made by a section of farmers from Vijayapura district that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister HK Patil  stated that the notices issued to them will be withdrawn, and the Deputy Commissioner is inquiring into the "mistake." 
He said the government has no intention to convert farmers' land into Waqf property and in case of any mistake, it will be rectified, and action taken against those responsible.
