58,929 waqf properties facing encroachment: Govt

The government on Wednesday said 58,929 waqf properties were facing encroachment, of which 869 were in Karnataka. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha by BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai, Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the ministry and the Central Waqf Council (CWC) received complaints regarding various issues relating to waqf properties from time to time and the same were forwarded to the state waqf boards and governments concerned for appropriate action.

Jharkhand Chief Minister designate Hemant Soren said the new inning of "Abua Sarkar" (Our Government) will start from Thursday after the swearing-in ceremony. A day before taking oath as the 14th chief minister of the state, Soren, along with his wife Kalpana, visited his ancestral Nemra village in Ramgarh district to pay tribute to his grandfather Sobaran Soren on his 67th death anniversary, observed as 'Sahid Diwas'.

Four Naxalites held, explosives seized in Chhattisgarh

Police on Wednesday arrested four Naxalites and seized explosives from them in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, an official said. They were apprehended near a forest of Pondum village under the Bhairamgarh police station limits, he said. The police team was out on anti-Naxal operation when it nabbed Sukku Hapka alias Pulal alias Patel, Mannu Hapka, Lachchhu Madvi and Kosal Madvi alias Gulab, he said. According to the police, Patel was the head of the 'Jantana Sarkar' (people's government of the Maoists) under the Puladi Revolutionary People's Committee, while Kosal was its member.

Nearly 1,500 Kerala govt employees found fraudulently claiming welfare pensions

Nearly 1,500 government employees, including gazetted officers and college professors in Kerala, have been found fraudulently receiving social security pensions, prompting Finance Minister K N Balagopal to order stringent disciplinary measures, an official source said on Wednesday. "It has been found that 1,458 government employees in the state are receiving social security pensions," the source said.

ED arrests Delhi-based importer brothers in money-laundering case

The ED on Wednesday said it arrested two Delhi-based importer brothers in a money-laundering case linked to alleged illegal foreign remittances worth more than Rs 4,800 crore made to Hong Kong and China. Mayank Dang and Tushar Dang were taken into custody on November 25 in the national capital under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. A local court has sent them to Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody till Thursday, the agency said.
