Farmers' protest: SC directs authorities to partially open Shambhu border

The top court asked officials to partially open the Shambhu border, where protesting farmers have been camping since February 13. The court directed the chiefs of both Punjab and Haryana to hold a meeting along with the SPs of adjoining Patiala and Ambala districts within one week for the reopening of the highway.

6 killed in road accident in West Bengal's Bagdogra

Six people were killed and two injured when a speeding vehicle hit them on the Asian Highway 2 at Bagdogra in Darjeeling district of West Bengal on Monday, police said. "All these people were pilgrims who were going to Jangli Baba mandir (Shiv mandir) to perform puja. They were hit by the speeding vehicle coming from the other end," a senior police officer said.

Criminal defamation case: SC defers hearing on CM Kejriwal's petition by 6 weeks to enable settlement

The Supreme Court today deferred by six weeks hearing on a plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging a Delhi High Court order upholding the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case for retweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in 2018. A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna, Sanjay Kumar and R Mahadevan posted the matter for hearing after six weeks after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, sought some more time to work out a settlement.

Supreme Court refuses to entertain petition against govt decision to cancel UGC-NET exam

 The top court today refused to entertain a fresh petition filed by some examinees challenging the government's decision to cancel the UGC-NET examination following alleged question paper leak, saying that entertaining it at this stage will create "chaos". "The Supreme Court stepping now will have a serious effect and there will be chaos all over," the CJI said while declining to entertain the plea filed by Praveen Dabas and others.

Delhi High Court grants interim protection from arrest to former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar

The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim protection from arrest till August 21 to former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, who has been accused of cheating and wrongly availing OBC and disability quota benefits. Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice to the Delhi Police as well as the UPSC on the anticipatory bail plea by Khedkar, and asked them to file their responses.

Nava Bharat media group chairman Vinod Maheshwari passes away

Media baron Vinod Maheshwari, chairman of the Nagpur-based Nava Bharat group, passed away in Mumbai on Monday morning, a source said. He was 81.
Maheshwari was not keeping well for the last five days. On Saturday, he was airlifted to Mumbai where he died on Monday morning.
