Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for a two-day visit to Laos to attend the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit. PM Modi's visit to Vientiane for a two-day visit comes at the invitation of his Laos counterpart Sonexay Siphandone. Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East), Jaideep Mazumdar, emphasised that India places immense value on all ASEAN-related mechanisms and asserted that the meeting will chart the future course of the India-ASEAN relationship. While addressing a special briefing on PM Modi's visit to Laos on Wednesday, Mazumdar said, "Prime Minister Modi will be travelling to Vientiane in Lao PDR, for the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit at the invitation of Prime Minister of Lao PDR, Sonexay Siphandone. The visit will be over 10th and 11th October. We attach great significance to all ASEAN-related mechanisms. This will be the Prime Minister's tenth attendance at the ASEAN-India Summit."


Puri-New Delhi Purushotam Express was halted for over three hours at Tundla Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh early Thursday after railway authorities were alerted about some suspected terrorists travelling with explosives, according to officials. However, the information, received from an X user, turned out hoax as nothing "suspicious" was found after intense checking carried out from around 2.30 am to 6 am, they added. "Around 2.30 am, every passenger in all coaches were woken up and their luggage were checked thoroughly with metal detectors and dog squads but nothing was found," a railway official from Prayagraj Rail Division said. He added, "We received an information from an X handle that some suspected terrorists were travelling in the train with explosives, which they would plant in Air India Delhi-Leh flight. We initiated action but it turned out to be a hoax."

India will share its knowledge and experiences in using digital public infrastructure (DPI) such as Aadhaar and Unified Payments Interface with the ASEAN nations and explore collaboration to address diverse challenges in education, healthcare, agriculture and climate change, a joint statement said on Thursday. In the joint statement issued after the 21st India-ASEAN summit which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two sides also declared that they would explore collaboration of cross-border linkages between payment systems in ASEAN and India through innovative digital solutions.

The National Financial Reporting Authority on Thursday imposed penalties totalling Rs 2.15 crore on an audit firm and two auditors for lapses in relation to the statutory audit of Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd for 2019-20. Venkatesh & Co as well as chartered accountants Dasaraty V and Desikan G have been penalised by the regulator. They were members of the engagement team for the statutory audit of Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL).

ED attaches assets worth over Rs 3 cr of ex-JK Grameen Bank branch manager in fraud case

The ED on Thursday said it has attached assets worth Rs 3.40 crore of a former Jammu and Kashmir Grameen Bank (JKGB) branch manager, his family members and some others in a case linked to alleged fraud with the lender. A provisional order was issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against former bank official Ishtiyaq Ahmad Parray, (a resident of Tangbagh, Khayam, Srinagar), Tariq Ali Parray, Haseena Bano and Maqsood Ali Parray to freeze their properties located in Srinagar and a flat in Delhi's Zakir Nagar area, the agency said in a statement.

Fema authority orders confiscation of Rs 252 cr assets of Chinese-controlled loan app

Assets worth more than Rs 252 crore of an Indian subsidiary of a Norwegian company "controlled" by Chinese persons have been ordered for confiscation in a FEMA probe against an "illegal" money lending mobile app named 'CashBean', the ED said on Thursday. The Enforcement Directorate said an order, post adjudication, was issued on October 7 against PC Financial Services Pvt Ltd (PCFS) under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) along with imposition of a penalty of more than Rs 2,146 crore against the said company.

JSW Steel on Thursday said it has signed a pact with BHP and Carbon Clean to accelerate the deployment of carbon capture technology in the steelmaking process. India's steel sector accounts for 12 per cent of India's greenhouse gas emissions, with an emission intensity of 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel compared to the global average of 1.9 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel, as per official estimates.

WTO slightly raises 2024 goods trade forecast but wary of potential setbacks

The World Trade Organisation raised its outlook for global goods trade this year slightly, but cautioned Thursday that increasing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty over economy policy pose substantial risks to its forecast. The Geneva-based WTO projected that global goods trade will increase by 2.7 per cent this year, compared with the 2.6 per cent it forecast in April. But it predicted growth of 3 per cent next year, down from the 3.3 per cent it forecast previously. Last year, the volume of world merchandise trade was down 1.1 per cent, pushed lower by high inflation and rising interest rates.
