Mumbai Police, to reduce noise pollution and unnecessary honking, initiated "No Honking Day" on Wednesday, June 14. Traffic Police officials will conduct an awareness campaign posting officials on all major junctions to create awareness and insist motorists avoid unnecessary honking.
Mumbai Police will also urge motorists to read and follow noise pollution rules and regulations for vehicle horns specified in rule 119 of the Central Vehicle Act 1989. The department also mentioned that those who fail to comply with the Motor Vehicles Act and Environment Protection Act will face action.
According to Deccan Herald, Mumbai police said in an appeal that, “Unnecessary honking causes harm to the environment and also adversely affects human health. The Traffic Control Branch, Mumbai has decided to observe 'No Honking Day’ on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, to curb the trend of honking among motorists. We urge motorists to positively respond to 'No Honking Day' by not honking the horns of their vehicles."
The Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Police (Traffic), Pravin Padwal, said that it is an awareness drive to curb noise pollution and refrain from unnecessary honking. “We want the motorists to support us and observe June 14 as No Honking Day,” Pravin further added.
The traffic rules and regulations aim to protect motorists, these rules are also helpful for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users.
Mumbai Police e-challan move
Mumbai Traffic Police earlier also started the e-challan system for those violating the traffic rules in the city. The e-challan is a system to issue a spot traffic ticket for violating the motor vehicle act or traffic regulation rules. Mumbai Police said, “This service will consist of hand-held machines for Spot Fining System and on-the-spot fine collection and a formal printed receipt will be issued to the individual."
