Sensex ends 75pts up after choppy day, Nifty tops 17,750; ITC extends rally

Stock market highlights: Picking pace during the second half the session, the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed 75 points, or 0.12 per cent, higher at 60,131 on Tuesday. The Nifty50, too, settled at 17,764, up 20 points. It had surpassed the 17,800-mark in intra-day trade.

This was the benchmarks' fourth consecutive day of gains.

Bajaj twins, IndusInd Bank, SBI, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, L&T, and ITC were the top gainers in the large-cap space today. Among these, ITC extended rally and surpassed Infosys to become sixth most valued firm in m-cap today.

In the broader markets, BSE SmallCap index outran the MidCap counterpart as it shut shop 0.21 per cent higher.

Among sectors, most indices settled in the positive zone with the Nifty PSU Bank index advancing 1.3 per cent, and the Nifty Metal index 0.65 per cent.

The offer was off to a slow with with just 8 per cent subscription till 3:30 PM on day one of the offer. Retail investors, so far, have been the front-runners.

COMMENT:: Investors nervous ahead of key US data

The domestic market succeeded in holding the gains, though multiple attempts were made by bears to reverse the trend considering the weak global market. Investors are highly nervous as they await the release of US GDP and PCE inflation data, which will guide the upcoming Fed action. The Fed is expected to raise their rates by another 25bps in its announcement on 3rd May.
