Stock Market LIVE Updates: Asian stocks slid, bond yields rose and the dollar was perched near a two-year high on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve cautioned it would ease the pace of rate cuts in the coming year and investors braced for a Bank of Japan policy decision.

The Fed cut interest rates on Wednesday as expected, but Chair Jerome Powell's explicit references to the need for caution from here on sent US stocks sharply lower, with Treasury yields surging and traders scaling back bets on rate cuts next year. READ MORE

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Aluminium seen as an outlier among metals; Hindalco better placed

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Most industrial metals are expected to stay bearish at least in early 2025. However, aluminium could be an exception. Aluminium prices have run higher to $2,600 per tonne levels due to a tight supply-demand equation.

The metal could go into a supply deficit in 2025 due to a combination of production cuts by Russia, civil unrest in Mozambique affecting a smelter, Guinea’s bauxite export ban, and China’s withdrawal of 13 per cent tax rebate to aluminium exporters. Demand may also slow down in Europe and in China’s property sector, but despite that Beijing’s aluminium demand is expected to grow about 2 per cent in 2024, and to sustain in 2025. READ MORE

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Govt likely to target FY26 fiscal deficit at 4.4% of GDP to support growth

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Concerned that aggressive fiscal consolidation could hinder growth momentum while private capital expenditure remains sluggish, the government is expected to set the fiscal deficit target at 4.4 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) for FY26 in the upcoming Budget.

“Given rising geopolitical headwinds that may impact external demand and sluggish private capex growth, aggressive fiscal tightening next year may not be the right thing to do. We have to retain some fiscal headroom without compromising on the promised fiscal consolidation roadmap,” said a government official. READ MORE
