The Indian rupee depreciated 3 paisa to settle at 82.84 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday as gains from rebound in equities were offset by dollar strength abroad. The dollar index continues to steady just below 103 mark on Thursday awaiting further clarity on Federal stance from a slew of US data due later in the global day. US producer inflation, retail sales and weekly jobless claims figures are due for the day. Rising crude oil prices also weighed on the local unit although a firm trend in domestic equity markets supported the local currency and restricted the fall. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex rose 335.39 points, or 0.46 percent, to 73,097.28 amid widespread buying across sectors. The broader NSE Nifty index settled up 153.30 points, or 0.7 percent, at 22,151. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened slightly weak at 82.84 and witnessed an intra-day low of 82.89 and a high of 82.82 against the greenback during the session.

UK pound is attempting sustained recovery above $1.28 mark on Thursday even as investor await fresh guidance on further central banking actions. The dollar index staying close to 103 mark ahead of a slew of US data later in the day is limiting gains in the pound. The dollar index climbed to 103.32 on the back of firm inflation levels reported this week although pared some of its gains as expectations of a Federal rate cut is not ruled out even as timing stays uncertain. GBPUSD is trading at $1.2815, up 0.16% on the day. Data yesterday showed UK economy has returned to growth after falling into a technical recession in the second half of 2023. On the NSE, GBPINR is trading at 106.15, up 0.16% on the day.

The dollar index climbed to 103.32 on the back of firm inflation levels reported this week although pared some of its gains as expectations of a Federal rate cut is not ruled out even as timing stays uncertain. Currently, the counter is quoting at 102.89 tracking higher benchmark US treasury yields above 4.2%. Among the basket currencies, EURUSD and GBPUSD are trading under pressure at $1.0941 and $1.2790 respectively.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex gained 335.39 points or 0.46% to 73,097.28. The Nifty 50 index added 148.95 points or 0.68% to 22,146.65.
