Greenland's prime minister said on Friday that the mineral-rich Arctic territory's people don't want to be Americans, but that he understands US President-elect Donald Trump's interest in the island given its strategic location and he's open to greater cooperation with Washington.
The comments from the Greenlandic leader, Mte B. Egede, came after Trump said earlier this week that he wouldn't rule out using force or economic pressure in order to make Greenland  which is an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark  a part of the United States. Trump said that it was a matter of national security for the US.
Egede acknowledged that Greenland is part of the North American continent, and a place that the Americans see as part of their world.
He said he hasn't spoken to Trump, but that he's open to discussions about what unites us.
Cooperation is about dialogue. Cooperation means that you will work towards solutions, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Sunday that the capabilities of India's young population will power the country's rise to becoming developed.
Addressing the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue here, he said some people may find the goal of India becoming developed difficult but it is not impossible.
No power can stop India from becoming a developed country if the spirit of 'Viksit Bharat' guides its every step, policy and decision, he said, highlighting the strength and numbers of the country's young population.
"Big targets have to be set for a country to march forward... This is what today's India is doing," Modi said, adding that the country is accomplishing numerous goals in different sectors ahead of time.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police which is probing the Torres investment scam has seized Rs 5 crore in cash, deposited by investors, from a Torres jewellery store in Dadar and a flat in the city, an official said on Friday.
The estimate of the total amount involved in the scam stood at Rs 22 crore, he said.
The seizure was made during searches on Thursday.
Some investors had handed cash to the company for making deposits after encountering snags in its online system, the official said.  As much as Rs 77 lakh were recovered from a flat rented by Tania alias Tazagul Karaxanovna Xasatova (52), one of the accused, in Colaba in south Mumbai.
Xasatova worked as a general manager at the Torres store, the official said.  Police also recovered over a thousand 'precious stones'. While the company charged its investors thousands of rupees for these stones, their actual value was around Rs 300 apiece, he said. constituency has forwarded various complaints of violations of model code of conduct, filed by AAP and its convener Arvind Kejriwal against BJP candidate Parvesh Verma, to the police for investigation.
The complaints filed by AAP's legal cell and Kejriwal alleged setting up of job camps under "Har Ghar Naukari" campaign for registrations,  and distribution of Rs 1100 by BJP and Verma, officials said.
The election officers in separate reports said that flying squads formed to check model code of conduct violations did not find any camps or pamphlets as alleged by the AAP.
The New Delhi district election officer in an action taken report submitted to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Delhi, has said that police authorities were asked to investigate the facts of the allegations of  job camps and distribution of Rs 1100 and take action as per Representation of Peoples Act.
It also said that instructions were issued to take  preventive steps
