The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League began with much fanfare on March 22, 2024. The star-studded opening ceremony at Chennai’s M A Chidambaram Stadium was headlined by enthralling performances by music composer A R Rahman, singers Mohit Chauhan and Sonu Nigam, and actors Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff.
In the first match of IPL 2024, played after the opening ceremony on March 22, defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six wickets.
Ten franchises are competing in this edition of the T20 extravaganza. The teams are CSK, Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Titans (GT), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Mumbai Indians (MI), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rajasthan Royals (RR), RCB, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
In earlier editions of the tournament, CSK and MI have won five titles each, while KKR has lifted the IPL trophy twice. The Hyderabad franchise has also won two titles, once each as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Deccan Chargers. Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans have won the title once each.
In total, 70 league-stage matches are to be held under the round-robin format until May 19 to decide the top four teams on the IPL 2024 points table which will qualify for the playoffs.
The first match of the playoff stage, called ‘Qualifier 1’, will be played on May 21 between the number 1 and number 2 teams on IPL 2024 points table. The second playoff match, called ‘Eliminator’, will be played between the teams ranked third and fourth on May 22. While the winner of ‘Qualifier 1’ will directly qualify to play the final match, the loser of ‘Qualifier 1’ will get to play against the winner of ‘Eliminator’ in the third match, called ‘Qualifier 2’, on May 24. The winner of ‘Qualifier 2’ will clash against the winner of ‘Qualifier 1’ in the grand finale on May 26.
