OpenAI unveils Daybreak cyber platform to find and fix vulnerabilities

OpenAI has announced Daybreak, a new cybersecurity-focused initiative designed to help software developers and security teams detect vulnerabilities, validate fixes, and patch systems faster using AI tools. The company says the system combines OpenAI’s AI models, Codex coding agents, and partnerships with major cybersecurity firms to integrate security checks directly into the software development process.
The announcement is significant because it comes at a time when AI companies are increasingly building specialised cyber-focused systems that can analyse software, identify weaknesses, and automate parts of security work that previously required teams of human researchers. OpenAI’s move also arrives shortly after rival Anthropic introduced Mythos, its own advanced cybersecurity AI system under Project Glasswing.
What exactly is OpenAI’s Daybreak
In simple terms, Daybreak is OpenAI’s attempt to use AI as a software security assistant. Instead of developers manually reviewing huge amounts of code for vulnerabilities, OpenAI says Daybreak can help scan repositories, identify realistic attack paths, analyse risky sections of code, suggest fixes, and even help validate whether those fixes actually work.

The company says the system is built around Codex Security, an AI-powered coding agent introduced earlier this year. According to OpenAI, Codex Security creates a threat model from a software repository and then focuses its analysis on the areas most likely to be exploited.
As per the company, for organisations managing large software systems, this could reduce the time spent reviewing security issues and handling backlogs of unresolved vulnerabilities.
What Daybreak can do
OpenAI said that Daybreak is designed to help with several parts of cybersecurity workflows. The company says it can assist with secure code reviews, threat modelling, vulnerability triage, malware analysis, patch generation, patch validation, dependency risk analysis, and remediation guidance.
OpenAI also said the system can generate and test patches directly inside repositories while maintaining access controls and monitoring systems. Another part of the workflow involves generating audit-ready evidence so organisations can track whether vulnerabilities were actually fixed.
In practical terms, OpenAI is positioning Daybreak as a tool that fits inside existing software development pipelines rather than something operating separately from them.
Why OpenAI is talking about safeguards
One of the central themes in OpenAI’s announcement is that the same AI systems that help defenders can also potentially help attackers. The company acknowledged that AI models capable of analysing codebases and identifying vulnerabilities could be misused if deployed without restrictions. Because of this, OpenAI says Daybreak includes verification systems, layered safeguards, and different access levels depending on how the tools are being used.
As part of the rollout, OpenAI introduced multiple cyber-focused configurations of GPT-5.5. The standard GPT-5.5 model will continue operating with regular safeguards for general use. Meanwhile, GPT-5.5 with Trusted Access for Cyber is intended for verified defensive work such as vulnerability analysis, malware research, detection engineering, and patch validation.
OpenAI also introduced GPT-5.5-Cyber, which the company described as its most permissive cyber-focused setup for specialised and authorised workflows such as penetration testing and red teaming.
Any similarity with Anthropic’s Mythos?
The comparison to Anthropic’s Mythos is difficult to avoid because both companies are now building AI systems focused on cybersecurity. However, the two projects are not identical.
Anthropic’s Mythos is an unreleased frontier AI model. Select cybersecurity features of the AI models are being offered by Anthropic to some companies for integration under Project Glasswing. The company has positioned it as a tightly controlled model. It is capable of analysing software behaviour, identifying vulnerabilities, and in some cases autonomously discovering exploit paths inside complex systems.
OpenAI’s Daybreak, meanwhile, is not being presented as one standalone AI model. Instead, it functions more like a broader security platform that combines multiple AI models, Codex Security agents, and cybersecurity integrations.
The positioning is also slightly different. Anthropic has repeatedly emphasised the potentially dangerous nature of cyber-capable AI systems and has limited access to selected partners. OpenAI, while also discussing safeguards, is framing Daybreak more as a practical defensive tool meant to help organisations secure software earlier in the development process.
That said, both companies ultimately seem to be moving toward a similar idea: using AI systems to automate parts of cybersecurity work that are currently time-consuming and heavily dependent on skilled researchers.
OpenAI partners with cybersecurity firms
OpenAI said Daybreak is being developed alongside several cybersecurity and infrastructure companies including Cloudflare, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Oracle, Zscaler, Akamai, and Fortinet.
The company also said it is working with industry and government partners as it prepares to deploy increasingly more cyber-capable models in the coming weeks.
