Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday felicitated Tokyo Olympics Silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu at the 51st Foundation Day celebration of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR & D).The sportsperson was appointed as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the police department by the Manipur government earlier in July after her outstanding show at the Games.Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Intelligence Bureau Director Arvind Kumar were present at the event held at BPR & D Headquarters in New Delhi.Chanu had opened India's medals tally on Saturday as she bagged a Silver in the Women's 49kg category at Tokyo International Forum.She lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk) during her four successful attempts across the competition that was held between July 23 and August 8 this year.

Shooter Manish Narwal clinches India's 3rd gold, Adana bags silver

Shooter Manish Narwal clinched India's third gold at the ongoing Paralympics while compatriot Singhraj Adana bagged the silver in the P4 Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 event here on Saturday. The 19-year-old Narwal shot a total of 218.2, a Paralympic record, to claim the yellow metal while Adana, who had won the bronze in the P1 men's 10m air pistol SH1 event on Tuesday, added a silver to his kitty with an effort of 216.7. Russian Olympic Committee's Sergey Malyshev took home the bronze with an effort of 196.8. Earlier in the qualifying round, Adana progressed to the medal round in fourth place with a total of 536 while Narwal shot 533 to qualify at seventh at the Asaka Shooting Range. The other Indian in the fray, Akash failed to make the final, finishing 27th in the qualifying round. As the pistol is held with one hand only, athletes in SH1 category have an impairment affecting one arm and/or the legs, for example resulting from amputations or spinal cord injuries. Discus thrower Vinod loses Paralympics bronze after being found ineligible

Indian discus thrower Vinod Kumar on Monday lost his F52 category bronze medal at the Paralympics here after being found ineligible in disability classification assessment by the competition panel. The 41-year-old BSF man, whose Army man father was injured during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, produced a best throw of 19.91m to finish third behind Piotr Kosewicz (20.02m) of Poland and Velimir Sandor (19.98m) of Croatia on Sunday. However, the result was challenged by some competitors. "...the panel was unable to allocate the athlete Vinod Kumar from NPC India with a sport class and the athlete was designated as Classification not Completed (CNC)," the organisers said in a statement. "The athlete is therefore ineligible for the Men's F52 Discus medal event and his results in that competition are void," it added. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil clinched India's second gold at the ongoing Paralympics, shattering the men's F64 category world record multiple times in a stunning Games debut performance here on Monday. The 23-year-old from Sonepat in Haryana, who lost his left leg below the knee after he was involved in a motorbike accident in 2015, sent the spear to 68.55m in his fifth attempt, which was the best of the day by quite a distance and a new world record.
