India will likely lead the way globally in use of 5G for new and interesting applications going ahead, given its unique and differentiated requirements, instead of simply following in the footsteps of other markets, according to Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson. Ericsson India MD Nitin Bansal told PTI that India has demonstrated the fastest roll-out of 5G network for any country globally and is "doing extremely well" as a market. The comments by the top honcho of the company coincides with completion of one year of the launch of 5G telephony services in India, that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the IMC 2022 conference held in October last year. The India Mobile Congress-2023 is all set to begin on Friday in New Delhi with the theme of 'Global Digital Innovation'. In an interview, Ericsson's Bansal asserted that safety and security of telecom networks is a "priority" as data forms the basis of enterprise applications, banking and many other critical ...

To further scale up the 6G research initiative in the country, Nokia is also in the process of building research collaborations with research institutes
The 5G network rollout in India has been remarkable and the country is among the top three nations with the largest 5G installed base in the world, a top Nokia official said on Thursday. Nokia President and CEO Pekka Lundmark was addressing an event during the inauguration of the company's 6G research lab in Bengaluru. "5G rollout in India is truly remarkable. This has been one of the fastest telecom network roll-outs ever and means India is now among the top three countries in the world that have the largest 5G installed base, with 5G download speeds beating those found in many advanced markets," Lundmark said. While there has been a decline in telecom gear shipment across major geographies, the 5G rollout in India has been able to offset a dip in the business of Ericsson and Nokia. Nokia posted 333 per cent growth in India sales at about Rs 9,500 crore in the June quarter of 2023. Ericsson reported 74 per cent growth in net sales in the June 2023 quarter in "South East Asia, Oce

Telecom industry body COAI has cautioned the telecom department that delicensing spectrum in the 6 Ghz band will hamper roll out of 5G advance and 6G services in the country. In a letter dated August 10 to Department of Telecom Secratory Apurva Chandra, the Cellular Operators Association of India -- whose members include Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea etc -- has requested the Department of Telecom to include the 6 gigahertz spectrum in the auction and support its allocation for mobile telecommunication at the global level. COAI said that the 6 GHz band is the only additional contiguous spectrum available in mid-band for IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications), beyond what has already been put up in auction. "Hence, it is important for future growth of 5G and beyond technologies, including the roadmap for 6G introduction in India. This spectrum will be crucial as India firms up an action plan for Bharat 6G. Delicensing this important chunk of spectrum will seriously

The proceeds of the facilities shall be utilised to finance the equipment and services in relation to RJIL's pan-India 5G roll out," Reliance Industries Ltd said in its annual report. While there has been a decline in telecom gear shipment across major geographies, 5G rollout in India led by Reliance Jio has been able to offset the dip in business of Ericsson and Nokia. Ericsson reported 74 per cent growth in net sales in the June 2023
After months of 5G network rollout across the country, India's largest telco Reliance Jio has informed the government that it has achieved 5G rollout obligations in all circles, and is ready to be tested as per stipulated parameters. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has sent out a communication to the Telecom Department (DoT) term cell informing them about rollouts achieved in all circles, according to sources who said that in the next step, the term cells will pick 10 per cent sites for testing. Once the test results meet the required parameters, the certificate about completion of rollout obligation is issued, they explained. Moreover, the telco -- which competes in the Indian telecom market with players like Bharti Airtel -- has successfully tested 5G services on bands of 26 GHz and 3300 MHz spectrum in Gujarat circle. "Gujarat LSA conducted Phase I of 5G roll out testing in 26 GHz and 3300 MHz spectrum allocated to Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd," DoT's Gujarat wing said in a post on

Airline passengers who have endured tens of thousands of weather-related flight delays this week could face a new source of disruptions starting Saturday, when wireless providers are expected to power up new 5G systems near major airports. Aviation groups have warned for years that 5G signals could interfere with aircraft equipment, especially devices using radio waves to measure distance above the ground and which are critical when planes land in low visibility. Predictions that interference would cause massive flight groundings failed to come true last year, when telecom companies began rolling out the new service. They then agreed to limit the power of the signals around busy airports, giving airlines an extra year to upgrade their planes. The leader of the nation's largest pilots' union said crews will be able to handle the impact of 5G, but he criticised the way the wireless licenses were granted, saying it had added unnecessary risk to aviation.
