Bharti Airtel's 5G network rollout has been more "measured" and lags behind its biggest rival Reliance Jio, according to an analyst report. Analysts at investment services provider JP Morgan in the report said the measured coverage could prompt a higher capital expenditure over the next 12-18 months by Bharti Airtel, which could face potential market share losses if the coverage gap is not closed. "Bharti Airtel lags Reliance Jio in most metrics across circles, suggesting a modest relative pace of roll-outs across 21 circles, implying higher capex risk and potential market share losses if not closed," the report said. The study, based on the analysis of a recent OpenSignal report, mentioned that 5G BTS rollouts in India have gathered pace in 2023, with 2,53,000 deployments till June 19. Equity research firm Jefferies in its analysis of subscriber data released by the telecom regulator Trai for April said that expanding subscriber base was led by Jio's 4.7 million active subscriber

Optical and digital solutions company Sterlite Technologies is seeing a strong commitment and demand for fibre, as customers across markets continue to prioritise network build outs, including in India, where massive 5G infrastructure deployments are taking place. Sterlite Tech Managing Director Ankit Agarwal said the company is "quite positive" about the India market prospects, given the rapid pace of fiberisation, and expectation of 5G scaling up from 50 million users to 250 million users in the coming years. "We are excited with the progress we are making, and are positive about mid-to-longer-term opportunities for our sector. In our conversation with customers that commitment remains in terms of their network plans," Agarwal told PTI. At a macro level, STL continues to see strong focus from customers, largely telcos, internet service providers and data centres players. "They continue to have strong commitment to 5G, Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and enterprises," he said. In India

Incremental spectrum usage charges should be applicable only on frequency bands that are shared among telecom operators and not on the entire radiowaves held by them, telecom regulator Trai reiterated its recommendation on Tuesday. The Department of Telecom had earlier asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to reconsider its recommendation that an increment of 0.5 per cent on the SUC rate should apply to the spectrum holding in a specific band in which sharing is taking place, and not on the entire spectrum holding (all bands) of the telecom operator. "The Authority concurs with the views of the stakeholders that in case incremental SUC is made applicable on an overall weighted average, the cost of spectrum sharing could surpass the benefits achieved by the TSPs. "Moreover, there is no rationale in incrementing overall weighted average SUC, post sharing of spectrum in a specific band(s)," Trai said in its reply to the DoT. At present, telecom operators use various spectrum

The government should earmark the entire spectrum available in the medium frequency range of 6 gigahertz band for mobile telephony so as to enable them to deliver high-speed data services in the range of 50-100 mbps, telecom industry body COAI said in a letter to the Department of Telecom. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), whose members include Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea, in the letter to telecom secretary K Rajaraman has said that mobile service providers need 2 megahertz frequencies in the medium band spectrum to enhance user experience and entire 1200 megahertz of frequencies available in 6 Ghz band should be earmarked for them. "We recommend that the most optimal allocation for the country in the 6GHz band is to identify the entire 5925-7125 MHz i.e., 1200MHz spectrum for IMT applications as this would maximize the economic and societal benefits for achieving the national target of 1 trillion digital economy," COAI Director General SP Kochhar said in
India must allocate more spectrum in mid-band like 6GHz for a seamless 5G mobile service in the country, else 5G download speed would be reduced to 50 per cent
