India has proven its mettle with its indigenous 4G/5G technology stack which is "now ready" and the country is poised to emerge as a major telecom technology exporter to the world in the coming three years, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday. Shipments of 5G smartphones spurted by 74 per cent in 2022 even as overall mobile phone shipments declined by 8 per cent in the year, CyberMedia Research said on Tuesday. According to the CyberMedia Research (CMR) report, Xiaomi led the overall smartphone market with a 21 per cent market share while Samsung led in the shipment of 5G smartphones with a 23 per cent market share. Driven by a resilient consumer appetite to switch and upgrade, the premium smartphone market continued to gain traction, the report said. In fact, the uber-premium smartphone segment (over Rs 1 lakh) grew a whopping over 95 per cent year-over-year. Revenue growth, 4G customer addition power strong result
Samsung India on Tuesday said that it intends to grow revenue from 5G models while continuing to cater to all segments of the mobile handset market. In value terms, 5G grew 78 per cent for the mobile industry in 2022, but Samsung said it grew over 100 per cent. The company, however, did not share the absolute revenue numbers. "In 2022, industry contribution to 5G handsets was 56 per cent as per industry analysts. But, 5G contributed 61 per cent to Samsung. We expect the value contribution to go up to 75 per cent in 2023," Samsung India Sr VP (Mobile Business) Raju Pullan said at the launch of the S23 model. Samsung said its premium segment considering handsets costing above Rs 30,000 expanded by 75 per cent during 2022 against 34 per cent by the industry. State-run BSNL will use about Rs 53,000 crore in upgrading its network to 4G and 5G this year as well as revamping landline network across the country, Union Minister for IT and Telecom Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The Government has announced a capital infusion of Rs 52,937 crore in BSNL during the next fiscal year starting April 1, 2023. While speaking on Budget 2023-24, the minister said BSNL's capital infusion is part of the Rs 1.64 lakh crore revival package announced last year and most of the balance sheet items of BSNL have already been addressed. "BSNL has raised new debt using the sovereign guarantees which were announced in the package. Now, the physical installation of new towers, upgradation from 2G, 3G to 4G and 5G and a major revamp in the landline systems of the MTNL and BSNL network will be taken up in this year using the capital allocation of Rs 53,000 crore which has been made for BSNL," Vaishnaw said. The massive wave of digitisation, rising penetration of smartphones, and technology adoption have opened the doors for both traditional and new-age sectors, observed the Economic Survey 2022-23, which was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. "The rollout of 5G services can unleash new economic opportunities and help the country leapfrog the traditional barriers to development, spur innovations by startups and business enterprises, and advance the 'Digital India' vision," it said. Smartphone company POCO expects an upgrade to 5G mobile phones from 4G coupled with pricing and design strategy to drive growth of the company's business by 60 per cent in this year, a top official of the company said. POCO India Country Head Himanshu Tandon told PTI that the sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone segment is likely to be most impacted because of inflationary pressures and rupee depreciation, and the industry will see strong competition in the Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000 mobile phone segment. Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Friday announced the launch of its 5G services in Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Akhnoor, Kupwara, Lakhanpur and Khour. In a statement, Airtel said its 5G services will be available to customers in a phased manner as the company continues to construct its network and complete the rollout.
