From staying the imposition of Rs 25 lakh on TMC's Abhishek Banerjee to granting an interim bail to Satyendar Jain on medical grounds, here are important cases that the apex court heard today
The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the imposition of Rs 25 lakh cost on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee by the Calcutta High Court which had dismissed his plea for recall of its previous order that CBI and ED could interrogate him in the West Bengal school jobs scam cases. The top court, however, did not stay at this stage the part of the high court order which had said that central probe agencies could quiz the Trinamool Congress general secretary in connection with these cases and fixed his plea for hearing in July. Abhishek Banerjee is the nephew of TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. An apex court vacation bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and P S Narasimha termed the high court's order "very balanced and fair" and observed that imposition of a cost of Rs 25 lakh was "perhaps not warranted". "But then, it does not mean that no cost can be imposed at all... I think the order is very balanced and fair," Justice Narasimha observed. The Calcutta High Co

Leader of opposition in the assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, told reporters on the sidelines of a state executive meeting that Banerjee might have felt angry for being interrogated for over nine hours by CBI on Saturday but that does not matter. "He seemed to be upset for being questioned by CBI for so many hours. But as the probe into the SSC scam, coal smuggling cases is gaining momentum with more arrests, if he is summoned for such grilling again in the coming days, he should not cry. He has to prove his innocence before the investigators. This is a court-monitored probe," the Nandigram MLA said. Echoing him, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar told reporters, "After the interrogation for nine hours Abhishek Banerjee's body language and reaction indicate that
On a day when her nephew has been called in for questioning by the CBI, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted that the centre's "agency-raj" has made her task of running the state challenging. She ostensibly took to the social media site, on the occasion of the anniversary of her party being sworn in to power in the state for the first time in 2011, replacing a Left Front government. "The agency-raj of an authoritarian government at the centre makes our task challenging, but millions (all) over the country are with us in our march," Banerjee said on Twitter. She said on this day in 2011, "we were sworn in to replace a 34-year-old monster regime and usher in 'Ma, Mati, Manush' (Mother, Earth and People) government in West Bengal". An hour before she tweeted, TMC leader and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee appeared before CBI at its Kolkata office at Nizam Palace, as part of the agency's probe into the school jobs scam. He has since remained ensconced there. Earlier in the

Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday asserted that more the BJP uses intimidatory tactics against West Bengal's ruling party, the more number of seats it will get in the 2026 assembly polls, as people will resist the saffron camp's gameplan. Banerjee, while addressing a rally at Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district, claimed that the Trinamool Congress will win not less than 240 seats in the next assembly elections. He also maintained the BJP government at the Centre was intimidating opposition parties through frequent CBI and ED raids. "From 184 seats in 2011 assembly polls, we got 211 seats in 2016. It went up to 213 seats in the 2021 elections. And keep in mind, TMC will not get less than 240 seats in the 2026 polls. The more the BJP's conspiracy against us grows using its agencies, the more our seats will go up, with people resisting their gameplan," he said. Banerjee recalled that during the 2021 polls, people had ignored the repeated visits by BJP leaders to Bengal and .

Banerjee, the TMC national general secretary, while addressing a rally as part of the 'Trinamool-eh Nabajowar' (new wave in Trinamool) mass outreach campaign, criticised the BJP MPs from West Bengal for being party to the conspiracy in withholding the dues of the state. "The TMC is the only party which will fight for your rights. The BJP government has withheld funds under the MNREGA scheme as it is yet to accept its defeat in the 2021 assembly polls. The BJP government has stalled funds for poor people in Bengal and is using that money to fund the Central Vista project in New Delhi," he said at a rally at Kumargram. Banerjee's remark drew sharp reactions from the BJP, which dubbed the allegations as baseless. "The funds have been stopped as the state has stopped submitting utilisation certificates on the funds spent under MNREGA. As the

TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee Wednesday accused the BJP government at the Centre of using religious sentiments, like the Ayodhya Ram Mandir to hide its failures to provide good governance in the last nine years. He also blamed the Centre for trying to starve the state government of funds by withholding the MGNREGA funds to it. "BJP wants to indulge in the politics of religion to hide its failures. Will politics over religion help it to satisfy the hunger of the poor people, who are reeling under the rise in the prices of essentials and cooking gas? The answer is no. "Politics over religion and Ram Mandir is a ploy by BJP to divert attention from the failures of its government at the Centre, he said addressing a rally at Onda in Bankura. The next panchayat and Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal will be held on the plank of the rights of the people of the state. BJP is trying to snatch away their rights.
