Nisaba Godrej resigns as independent director from VIP Industries board

Godrej Consumer's executive chairperson Nisaba Godrej has resigned as an independent director from the board of luggage and travel accessories maker VIP Industries, citing differences over leadership accountability and succession planning. The resignation of Godrej group scion as an independent director came on June 3, VIP Industries said in a stock exchange filing on Tuesday. Godrej in her resignation letter said: "Due to my differing view on leadership accountability and succession planning, I will be resigning from the Board effective June 3rd, 2024." The board of VIP Industries is led by Dilip Piramal as Chairman of the Rs 2,250-crore company. Nisaba Godrej was reappointed to the board of VIP Industries in April 2021 as an independent director and her term was ending on March 31, 2026. FM pitches for regulatory impact assessments to enhance accountability

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday pitched for a "regulatory impact assessment" to study the positives and negatives of a decision before it is taken, and also for existing rules. She said having such a facility can help enhance the transparency and accountability in the policymaking process. "We may also have a regulatory impact assessment to critically assess the positive and negative effects of proposed and existing regulations and non regulatory alternatives," she said, speaking at an event here. Time limits to decide the applications under various regulations should also be named in the interest of ease of doing business, she added. Regulatory actions may vary from disclosure to light touch regulation and supervision to tight regulation and full fledged supervision depending on the risk implications, she said. Maha Council clears bills on direct election of sarpanches, council heads

The Maharashtra Legislative Council on Tuesday passed two bills that will enable election of gram panchayat sarpanches, presidents of municipal councils and nagar panchayats directly by voters. The bills were cleared by the Legislative Assembly on Monday. Tabling the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships Act, 1965, in the Upper House, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the move was aimed at increasing accountability of these local bodies. So far, members of gram panchayats, municipal councils and nagar panchayats had been electing chiefs of these bodies. Opposing the bills, Ambadas Danve, the Leader of Opposition and Shiv Sena legislator, asked what would be the situation if the president is elected from one party, while councillors of another party have a majority.
