UG and PG aspirants will now be able to seek admission in any discipline irrespective of the one studied by him or her in Class 12 or at the undergraduate programme, after qualifying in a national or university-level entrance exam, according to new norms of the University of Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC on Thursday announced the draft regulations that are being set as the minimum standards of instruction for the grant of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. According to UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, the new regulations will introduce greater flexibility, remove disciplinary rigidity, bring in inclusivity and multidisciplinary learning opportunities for students. The admission process for nursery, kindergarten and class 1 in around 1,741 private schools in Delhi for the 2025-26 academic session began on Thursday, officials said. The Delhi government's Department of Education (DoE), in a circular issued on November 12, said the last date to submit registration forms is December 20, and the first general admission lists will be published on January 17, 2025. The schools listed their admission criteria on Wednesday. The key criteria listed by many schools were neighbourhood, distance, and proximity to schools whereas girl child, single girl child, siblings and single parents are the other criteria on the list. Some schools also listed criteria for Sikh and Christian minorities, economically disadvantaged groups, and parents with physical disabilities. Private schools have been directed to reserve 25 per cent of their seats for students from EWS/DG categories and children with disabilities. Separate admission lists will be published for these .

Female candidates outnumber males in the number of applicants to West Bengal's central undergraduate courses admission portal, a higher education department official said on Monday. The portal which was opened on June 24 for admission to seats in 461 colleges and 16 universities closed on July 6 midnight. The portal was launched for the first time this year by the higher education department. "Of 5,27,673 applicants which were validated after scrutiny, 2,99,800 were women," the higher education department official told PTI on Monday. The official said there were 50 applicants from 'others' category. The 'others' in the parlance belong to the LGBTQ+ community, he said. Altogether 34,64,918 applications were filed with 98,089 coming from outside Bengal. The Delhi University will provide single girl child quota across its programmes from the academic session 2024-2025, varsity officials announced on Tuesday as it began the admission process for the undergraduate courses. At a press conference here, DU officials launched the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) for UG admissions into 69 colleges and departments with 71,000 seats on offer. While there are no major changes in the admission policy this year, the varsity, in a first, has introduced reservation for single girl child in all programmes as part of the supernumerary seats, DU registrar Vikas Gupta said. Asked about the procedure to identify the single girl child, Gupta told PTI, "We are working on modalities to identify the single girl child claimants." Last year, DU introduced a supernumerary category to provide admissions to orphan students; a male and a female in each programme of each college. More than 25 per cent of the 59,100 candidates who secured admission in Delhi University's first round of seat allocations have frozen their seats while nearly 60 per cent of them have opted for an upgrade to their higher 'programme+college combination' preference, a varsity official said Thursday. Thursday was the last day for opting for an upgrade. "As many as 35,388 students have opted for an upgrade, while 15,398 have frozen their seats," the official said. It was not immediately clear the status of the rest about 8,300 candidates.
