India needs to grow at 9-10% for 3 decades to be $35 trn economy: Kant

India needs to grow at an annual rate of 9-10 per cent for around three decades and constant innovations to become a USD 35 trillion economy by 2047, India's G-20 Sherpa and former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said on Sunday. "We are the fifth largest economy in the world and by 2027 we will surpass Japan and Germany to become the third largest economy in the world. And our aim is that by the time we turn 100 in 2047, India should be a USD 35 trillion economy," Kant said while addressing a session at Mumbai Tech Week (MTW) hosted by Tech Entrepreneurs Association Mumbai (TEAM). Which means, India will become the second largest economy in the world, Kant stated. "And to be a USD 35 trillion economy means that we need to grow year after year for close to three decades by 9-10 per cent annually and this means that we need to do a lot of disruptions and constant innovation," he noted. Kant said that India created the digital identity of 1.4 billion people and technologically the country

Amitabh Kant calls for 25 mn job creation by 2030 in hospitality industry

India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on Monday asked hospitality and tourism sector players to tell politicians about creation of 25 million jobs by 2030 while seeking their help for the demand of industry and infrastructure status. Speaking at the 6th Hoteliers' Conclave organised by the Hotel Association of India (HAI), Kant said somehow the tourism industry has failed to tell the politicians that it is a big creator of jobs, while agreeing with their demand for industry status. "If you look at tourism, I think from a perspective of a political lens, the politician only understands one thing and that is how many jobs is the tourism sector creating," he said. Kant further said, "Tourism has a huge multiplier impact for every direct job that you create, you create seven indirect jobs, but I think somehow the tourism industry has failed to tell the politicians that we are a big creator of jobs." In terms of employment, Thailand creates close to 20 million jobs, Malaysia about 15 million

Global South must adopt digital public infra to achieve SDGs: Kant

The Global South needs to adopt digital public infrastructure to technologically leapfrog and achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Tuesday. Addressing an event organised by Carnegie India, Kant said now the world will grow on the back of digital public infrastructure. He said if the the world has to grow equitably then the global south is important because 4 billion people still do not have digital identity, 1.3 billion people do not have a bank account, while 133 countries in the world do not have fast payments. "And therefore you need the digital public infrastructure to enable these countries to technologically leapfrog and ensure that we are able to make sustainable development goals reached to them. "And that is really the key, the SDGs must reach the global south," Kant said. The term 'global south' is used to refer poor and developing countries. India needs to forge ties with Global South to accelerate growth: Kant

The country needs to work in partnership with Global South to accelerate its growth rate to achieve the dream of Vikshit Bharat (developed India) by 2047, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Monday. The next two decades are said to be the most significant of India's growth story, he said while speaking at the First Regional Conference on Access to Legal Aid. According to a Niti Aayog roadmap, India would be Vikshit Bharat with a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047 and per capita income of about USD 18,000, he noted. "If this level of sustained growth that we aim to achieve and opportunities must now catalyse this, we need to work in partnership with Global South," Kant said. The Global South is critical and important because this year, 80 per cent of the world's growth will come from emerging markets and the Global South, he said. According to the IMF, he said, almost two-thirds of global growth would come from emerging markets in the next two decades. "This year itself, six of the faste

Planners and architects have key role to play in India's urbanisation: Kant

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said on Friday said planning and architecture are important fields in India and will contribute significantly to the country's urbanisation. Architects give life to the cities in the country, Kant said while addressing the 41st convocation ceremony of the School of Planning and Architecture here. "I have always believed that planning and architecture is the most important occupation in India and the most creative journey for any student...If the Indian cities have to be given a new life, only planners and architects can do that," he said. "Early in my career as the secretary of tourism in Kerala.... I felt I have probably gotten into the wrong profession, I should have been a planner or architect," Kant said. He said India is undergoing massive urbanisation and the process is slated to transform significantly in the next four to five decades. Kant said that planners and architects have a key role to play in building the new India of tomorrow. In

India made G20 far more inclusive by making AU permanent member: Kant

India has made G20 far more inclusive by ensuring the induction of the African Union as a permanent member of the grouping under its presidency, New Delhi's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Tuesday, days ahead of the second edition of the virtual Voice of Global South summit. In an address at a conference, Kant also described the G20 New Delhi leaders' declaration as a very hard-fought victory for the Global South as it reflected the aspirations of the developing countries. The conference themed "G20 Delhi Summit: Inclusive Growth and Rise of the Global South" was organised by India Writes Network, Centre for Global Insights India and School of International Relations, Jawaharlal Nehru University. "One of the lasting images that will carry on forever in my mind of India's G20 presidency is the image of the prime minister hugging the president of Comoros and welcoming the African Union as a permanent member of the G20," Kant said. Developed nations must advance emissions target to 2040, says Kant

Climate change is the biggest crisis for the world, and to achieve net-zero target by 2050, developed countries will have to advance their emissions target to 2040, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Wednesday. Addressing 'The Energy Transition Dialogues' organised by ORF, Kant said 80 per cent of growth in the world economy will come from emerging economies. "Climate change is the biggest crisis before us... therefore there has to be a huge sense of urgency and that... must come from G7 countries and China," he said. Net-zero emissions mean that the world is not adding any further emissions to the atmosphere. "If you want to achieve net zero by 2050, the developed world, which has occupied almost 90 per cent of the carbon space in the world, needs to advance its net zero target to 2040," he said. India has committed to going net zero by 2070 and China by 2060. The Group of Seven (G7) nations have committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Kant emphasised on the need

Having 8-9% growth in economy for next 3 decades a challenge: Kant

India is poised to become a USD 5 trillion economy and the challenge for the country will be to grow at 8-9 per cent for the next three decades, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Thursday. Addressing an event organised by Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI) here, Kant said India's economy can't grow at higher rates without the support of the private sector. "This is India's moment. India is poised to become a USD 5 trillion economy," he said, adding that the government has pushed the limit on infrastructure. "The challenge (for India) is to grow at 8-9 per cent for three decades," he said. Pointing out that presently the size of China's economy is five times of India, Kant said, "To catch up with China, we will have to grow at 10 per cent." Asserting that the quality of Indian airports is better than those in Europe, he said, "Our domestic airlines are also much better than international airlines." India's growth story will remain intact, he said, while emphasising on the

Speaking at an event in the national capital, Kant also expressed confidence that the country, which has a young population, will grow at higher rates. New Delhi declaration shows India can be champion of multilateralism: Kant

The New Delhi G20 declaration adopted by leaders has demonstrated India's great ability to be a champion of multilateralism and bring the world together on global developmental issues and conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine crisis, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Wednesday. The green development pact, a key part of the declaration, offers a great opportunity for the Indian automotive and components sector to become the global leader in electric and sustainable mobility, he said asking the industry to go all-electric while speaking here at the annual convention of Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA). "The New Delhi leaders' declaration that has come out is very, very inclusive, very ambitious. It has 83 paras in all. This is the first time that all 83 paras have 100 per cent consensus," Kant asserted. In the declaration, there is no 'reservation, brackets and chair's summary', he said adding all the 83 paras, including the eight paras on the ...

It took over 200 hours of non-stop negotiations by a team of Indian diplomats to deliver a consensus on the G20 declaration that was adopted at the Leaders' Summit here, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Sunday. The team of diplomats, including joint secretaries Eenam Gambhir and K Nagraj Naidu, held 300 bilateral meetings and circulated 15 drafts with their counterparts on the contentious Ukraine conflict to drive home a consensus that was clinched on the first day of the G20 Leaders Summit itself. "The most complex part of the entire G20 was to bring consensus on the geopolitical paras (Russia-Ukraine). This was done over 200 hours of non-stop negotiations, 300 bilateral meetings, 15 drafts," Kant said. Kant said he was greatly assisted in the efforts by Naidu and Gambhir.
