Apec Summit

As Trump whiplash looms, APEC closes with China's Xi front and centre

After two days of meetings in Lima that rarely ventured beyond platitudes in discussing the strategies of the region's major economies, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum wrapped up Saturday with a spirit of detente that many fear the annual summit may not see again for four years. The 21 leaders from economies bordering the Pacific, including US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, descended on Peru this week at a time when America's incoming president, Donald Trump, has vowed to withdraw the US from its leadership of a global free trade agenda. Few could help noting that Biden's late entrance to the traditional APEC family photo on Saturday lent itself to political metaphor, as the rest of the leaders prepared to pose onstage before looking around to find Biden missing. They tittered for five awkward minutes before a seemingly dazed Biden emerged and took his place in the far back corner, standing between Thailand's 38-year-old Prime Minister Paetongtarn

Committed to 'managing' China-US ties 'responsibly': Biden to Xi Jinping

US President Joe Biden on Monday assured his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that he is committed to "managing" the bilateral ties "responsibly" as the two leaders exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries. The two presidents met on the sidelines of the APEC summit in San Francisco in November and agreed to cool down the raging tensions between the top two economies of the world. In his message to Xi, Biden said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979, the ties between the US and China have facilitated prosperity and opportunities for both the countries and the world. Biden said he is committed to "managing this important relationship responsibly", adding that he looks forward to continuing advancing the US-China relationship based on the progress made by the predecessors of the two leaders and through multiple meetings and discussions between the two heads of state, China's state-run Xinh

Expect candid talk: Blinken defends Biden's 'dictator' remark for Xi

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the US will continue to say things that China doesn't like, as he defended President Joe Biden's remarks wherein called his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping a "dictator". Biden called Xi a "dictator", just hours after they met for the first time in more than a year and held candid and productive discussions to revive bilateral ties on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco on Wednesday. When pressed on whether Biden's comments were the position of the US government, Blinken responded that the president "speaks for all of us", CBS News reported. "Well, it's not exactly a secret that we have two very different systems," the commercial broadcast television quoted Blinken as saying. "And the president always speaks candidly, and he speaks for all of us." "We will continue to say things and continue to do things that China doesn't like, just as I assume that they will continue to do and say things that we

Xi's deal to slow fentanyl's flow into US unlikely to solve overdose crisis

Experts say new steps China has agreed to will eventually reduce the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the US, but that alone will not stem the overdose crisis killing Americans at a record rate. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at a meeting Wednesday in California that China is telling its chemical companies to curtail shipments to Latin America and elsewhere of the materials used to produce fentanyl, which is largely finished in Mexico and then smuggled into the US. China has also resumed sharing information about suspected trafficking with an international database. It's a step in the right direction because not doing this would be negligent, said Adam Wandt, an associate professor of public policy at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. If this is a diplomatic option that we did not take, every fentanyl death over the next decade would be on our heads. But he and others described the steps as necessary in addressing the overdose crisis in th

APEC Summit: Biden seeks to assert US' grip on Pacific amid global turmoil

President Joe Biden is looking to use this week's summit of Asia-Pacific leaders to show world leaders the United States has the gumption, attention span and money to focus on the region even as it grapples with a multitude of foreign and domestic policy crises. Biden's highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday is the main event of his four-day visit to San Francisco, where leaders from the 21 economies that make up the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum are gathering for their annual summit. The talks with Xi are of enormous importance as the leaders of the world's two biggest economies try to find a measure of stability after what's been a difficult year for U.S.-China relations. But the White House also wants to demonstrate to APEC's leaders that Biden can remain focused on the Pacific while also trying to keep the Israel-Hamas war from exploding into a broader regional conflict and to persuade Republican lawmakers to continue to spend .

US-China ties can easily veer towards conflict if not well managed: NSA

The United States-China could easily veer towards a conflict if it is not well managed, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has said ahead of the much-anticipated meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Biden and Xi are scheduled to meet in San Francisco on Wednesday on the sidelines of the APEC Leadership meeting. The White House is calling it a summit. Sullivan on Monday said the US president has the opportunity to engage, so do the rest of his team, on how they effectively manage peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. "Those are some of the issues that, through intense diplomacy, we have been able to manage," he said. "Then will look for opportunities to actually generate affirmative outcomes that deliver tangible progress for the American people in areas where our interests overlap. I mentioned, for example, the issue of fentanyl. "We're hoping to see some progress on that issue this coming week, and that could then open the

Biden to travel to San Francisco to host APEC Summit participants

US President Joe Biden will be travelling to San Francisco to host the representatives of the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation member economies for the APEC Economic Leaders' Week. Biden, who will be leaving the White House on November 14, has also invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the APEC Leadership Summit, but his visit has not been confirmed yet. The president will highlight the strength and resilience of the US economy, "our longstanding economic ties with the Asia-Pacific, the surge of job-creating investments from APEC economies into the US in recent years, and the role of the US economy in driving growth and innovation in the Asia-Pacific and globally", White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. "He will also reaffirm our commitment to partnering with APEC economies to chart the next chapter of sustainable, inclusive regional growth, further strengthen the ties between our economies and our populations, and support American families and workers," she sai

Meeting Xi on sidelines of Nov APEC in San Francisco a possibility: Biden

President Joe Biden said Friday that he could potentially meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of next month's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. There has been no such meeting set up, but it is a possibility," Biden told reporters when asked about the prospects of a face-to-face meeting with the Chinese leader. Biden and Xi have not spoken since their meeting last November of the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. White House officials have previously made clear that they hoped the two leaders would soon hold talks, and administration officials have been working to get the Chinese to agree to a meeting. Relations between the world's two largest economies have faced no shortage of strain over the last year. The Biden administration shot down a Chinese spy balloon that traversed the continental US earlier this year. The Chinese government hacked the emails of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. China's top diplomat calls on US to host 'cooperative' APEC summit

China's foreign minister called on the US on Tuesday to do what it can to host a cooperative meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders in November, criticising those who seek to play up a confrontation between democracy and authoritarianism. Wang Yi said the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco in November should promote cooperation rather than provoke confrontation, and said the U.S. should show fairness and inclusiveness to create better conditions for a smooth meeting. We should ... oppose advocating for democracy versus authoritarianism' and imposing our own values and models on others, he said at the launch of a government report on its proposals for what it calls a global community of shared future.
