Flood situation in Assam improves slowly, 130K people still affected

The flood situation in Assam improved on Sunday with the number of people reeling under the deluge decreasing to 1.30 lakh in 10 districts, officials said. Two major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, continued to flow above the danger level. A central team, comprising top officials from various ministries, visited the state to assess the damage caused by two waves of floods this year. Over 1.30 lakh people in 23 revenue circles and 423 villages across 10 districts remain affected in the state, the officials said. The affected districts are Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Kamrup Metropolitan and Cachar. Assam floods: Home minister talks with CM Sarma, assures him of all help

The flood situation in Assam improved gradually even as over 5 lakh people in 17 districts are still reeling under the deluge, official sources said on Tuesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah telephoned Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the situation, reiterating assurance of all help from the Centre, while Sarma also received a call from his Odisha counterpart offering use of the eastern state's disaster management system to mitigate the challenges. The flood situation in Assam continued to improve on Sunday, even as two more persons died and nearly six lakh people were affected across 17 districts, an official bulletin said. According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person died at Karimganj and another at Nilambazar revenue circles of Karimganj district. With the latest fatalities, the toll in this year's flood, landslide, storm and lightning mounted to 109. The report said more than 5,97,600 people are impacted due to flooding in Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari and Sivasagar districts. Assam flood: Situation continues to improve as water level receding fast

The flood situation in Assam continued to improve on Sunday as water level is receding fast across the state, officials said. Assam floods: Situation remains grim; water receding in many parts

The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Saturday even though the water levels have started receding in many parts of the state, officials said. The India Meteorological Department's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has said that moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places of Assam with isolated heavy to very heavy rain likely over Kokrajhar district. "Low to moderate flash flood risk is likely over few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Arunachal Pradesh and southern parts of Assam and Meghalaya," it added. The flood situation in Assam has shown no signs of improvement, with nearly 14 lakh people across 26 districts continuing to grapple with the deluge as of Friday, according to an official report. The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Thursday even though flood waters started receding in many parts of the state, officials said. The flood situation in Assam improved marginally on Wednesday with water levels of major rivers showing a receding trend, reducing the affected population to 1.7 million across 26 districts, according to an official bulletin. Vast tracts of land, however, remain inundated with sporadic rainfall reported from several districts. Seven deaths were reported on Tuesday with two in Cachar and one each in Dhubri, Dhemaji, South Salmara, Nagaon and Sivasagar, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Assam floods: 114 animals die in Kaziranga National Park, 95 rescued

The devastating flood in Assam's famed Kaziranga National Park (KNP) has claimed the lives of 114 wild animals while 95 others have been rescued till Saturday, an official said. The animal mortality in the KNP has increased from 77 till Friday. The dead animals include four rhinos and 94 hog deer due to drowning in the KNP and 11 others during treatment. The forest officials rescued 86 hog deer, two each of sambar deer and scops owl and one each of a rhino calf, Indian hare, otter, elephant and jungle cat, the KNP official said. Currently, 34 animals are under medical care while 50 others have been released after treatment, the official said.
