Semiconductor shortage: Maruti, Hyundai see decline in wholesales in Jan

Top passenger vehicle makers, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Honda, on Tuesday reported decline in vehicle dispatches from factories to dealers in January amid shortage of semiconductors continuing to hamper production. However, Tata Motors and Skoda Auto India posted huge jump in their domestic wholesales during the month. Maruti Suzuki India's domestic sales slipped by 8 per cent to 1,36,442 units last month as against 1,48,307 units in January 2021. "The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles which are primarily sold in domestic market. The company took all possible measures to minimise the impact," MSI said in a statement. Similarly, Hyundai Motor India Ltd reported a 15.35 per cent drop in its domestic sales to 44,022 units last month against 52,005 units in January 2021. In contrast, Tata Motors' total passenger vehicles sale was higher at 40,777 units last month as compared to 26,978 units

Mahindra & Mahindra total sales increase 20% in January

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on Tuesday said its total sales increased by 19.55 per cent to 46,804 units in January 2022. The company's total sales stood at 39,149 units in January 2021. The Mumbai-based auto major's passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market stood at 19,964 units last month as against 20,634 units in January last year. Commercial vehicles sales increased to 23,979 units last month as compared with 16,229 units in January 2021. The company said its exports last month stood at 2,861 units as against 2,286 units in the same month last year. "We continued our growth trajectory with an overall growth of 20 per cent in January 2022...We continue to closely monitor the semi-conductor related parts issue and take corrective action as appropriate," M&M Automotive Division CEO Veejay Nakra said in a statement.

Prolonged waiting period due to chip crunch can harm demand: Maruti Suzuki

Longer waiting periods with semiconductor shortage affecting production can have a negative impact on car demand, although the supply constraints of chips have gradually improved over the last few months, according to a senior official of car market leader Maruti Suzuki India. The company currently has a pending order of around 2.5 lakh units with demand in the market continuing to be buoyant, while its production was over 80 per cent of normal in November. "The bookings show that the demand continues to be quite robust, both in terms of inquiries and the bookings, but now availability is an issue and waiting periods have gone up," Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) Senior Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) Shashank Srivastava. He further said, "So we are a little bit afraid that the longer waiting periods will affect the demand pattern and it can have a negative impact." Maruti Suzuki keeps close watch on price movement of commodities

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is keeping a close watch on the price movement of commodities, which had touched an 'unprecedented' high in the second quarter, to fix its vehicle prices in the future as it has not fully passed on the impact to consumers, according to a senior company official. The company is hoping for a softening of commodity prices, which also move cycles, having "sort of reached the peak". "Material cost is an important cost in the overall cost structure for any OEM (original equipment manufacturer). Normally, 70-75 per cent of the total cost of an OEM is material cost. "In the second quarter, our material cost to net sales ratio had gone up to a very high figure of 80.5 per cent. This is unprecedented," Maruti Suzuki India Senior Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava told PTI.
