India is working to bring the world together through the promotion of the Ayush sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Friday. Sonowal was addressing a function after inaugurating an Ayush facility at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) near here. In the last nine years, Ayush has gained accessibility and credibility in the world and people are increasingly accepting it as a method to make their lives better, the minister said. Speaking about the Ayush centre at the GMCH, Sonowal said the centre is dedicated to the people of Goa and will be the first such facility in the country. The ministries of Ayush and Minority Affairs have jointly taken a significant step to promote and develop the Unani system of medicine in India. The Ministry of Minorities Affairs has approved a grant of Rs 45.34 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), a centrally sponsored scheme (CSS), an Ayush Ministry statement said. With support of this scheme, Unani medicine facilities will be upgraded in Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Silchar and Bengaluru. The grant has been approved for establishing various facilities of Unani Medicine at these locations. The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) has been sanctioned a total of Rs 35.52 crore and the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru has been sanctioned Rs 9.81 crore, the statement said. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the AYUSH ministry have signed an agreement for collaboration and cooperation for research in the field of integrated medicine. Integrated medicine refers to using alternative medicine systems such as ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy with orthodox systems as part of a treatment plan. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will combine traditional knowledge with modern research and boost ayurveda's identity on the basis of scientific evidence, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said. Amid the growing popularity of yoga across the world, the government's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Tuesday said it is framing standards for yoga equipment and some traditional herbal medicines on request from the Ayush Ministry. Addressing a press conference, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said the Bureau has already framed standards on the glossary of yoga terminology, yoga mat and yoga centre. "We are also working on yoga equipment like the one used for jal neti kriya as well as some traditional herbal medicines," he said. Already standards for 17 herbs out of identified 34 have been published, he said. The standard framed for 'yoga centre' specifies the service requirements for operations, benchmarking and infrastructure, including minimum qualification for yoga wellness instructors and staff of the yoga centre. Rajasthan has 1,000 operational health and wellness centres under the central government's National AYUSH Mission, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Tika Ram Jully informed the assembly on Friday. Jully added that 914 men and 823 women had been appointed as yoga instructors on a part-time basis at these centres. The state government has written to the Centre to open another 1,019 health and wellness centres, he said. The Social Justice and Empowerment Minister was replying to supplementary questions during Question Hour on behalf of the ayurveda minister. Earlier, in a written reply to a question by BJP MLA Gopichand Meena, Jully informed that health and wellness centres were being run by the Rajasthan State AYUSH Society according to the AYUSH ministry's guidelines under the centrally-sponsored scheme. The honorarium of the part-time yoga instructors at these centres is determined at the ministry level, he added.

Union Minister of Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday laid the foundation stone of the new complex of the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa here on Friday and said the new infrastructure will give a boost to the traditional system of medicine. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (Ministry of Ayush) and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (Ministry of Health) here on Tuesday for inter-ministerial cooperation for the promotion and facilitation of "One Herb, One Standard".
