US rolls into semifinals of 2024 Paris Olympic basketball tournament

All the favored teams in the first three men's basketball quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics had problems. Canada lost to France. Serbia erased a 24-point deficit to beat Australia. Germany had to shake off a double-digit deficit before beating Greece. So, going into the fourth and final game of the night, the U.S. knew what it had to do. We wanted to come out and make sure we were the aggressor, U.S. coach Steve Kerr. They made it look easy, too. Devin Booker led a balanced front with 18 points and the Americans had little trouble with Brazil in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics, winning 122-87 on Tuesday. The U.S. (4-0) moves on to face Serbia (3-1) in Thursday's semifinals, while Germany (4-0) takes on France (3-1) in the other semifinal. Winners of those games will play Saturday night for the gold medal; Thursday's losers will play Saturday morning for the bronze medal. Everybody expects us to win," U.S. forward Jayson Tatum said. "But you don't take things for granted,

Nigeria becomes first African basketball team to qualify for Olympic QFs

Ezinne Kalu had a giant smile on her face as she joined her teammates for a celebratory run around the court with Nigerian flags. Nigeria had reached a place no African country in men's or women's basketball had ever gone before the quarter-finals of the Olympics. Kalu scored 21 points and Nigeria secured a spot in the elimination round in Paris by downing Canada 79-70 on Sunday for its second win of the Olympics. It means a lot, you know, not just to us as a team, but to the entire world of Africa, Kalu said. "It only gets harder from here." When the final buzzer sounded, the team went to midcourt to start celebrating, with an assistant coach using her phone to record the moment. The Nigerians stopped to high-five the Canadians and then returned to celebrating with a midcourt huddle. An assistant coach grabbed a flag from a fan for photos on the court, and the Nigerians took their time hugging and posing for more photos as they savoured the moment. Surreal. This isn't going to

Kevin Durant likely to play for US in its Olympic opener against Serbia

There is hope that Kevin Durant will play for the US in its Olympic opener against Serbia on Sunday, which means the men's national team may have 12 players available for the first time this summer. That is unless something else happens. The Americans open their path toward what they hope is a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal when they take on three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and World Cup finalist Serbia in the opener for both teams at the Paris Games. Durant missed all five exhibition games the US played coming into Paris because of a calf strain, and coach Steve Kerr stopped short of definitively saying Saturday that he is in the line-up for the opener. Hopefully, Kerr said. Durant was on the floor for practice, while presumed starting centre Joel Embiid was not because of illness. Kerr said he didn't expect Embiid to miss Sunday's game. I'm confident we'll have everybody ready tomorrow, Kerr said. There have been signs in recent days that USA Basketball expects Durant a ..

Olympics 2024: What to know, who to watch in men's basketball competition

A roadmap to follow for the men's basketball competition during the Paris Olympics: ATHLETES TO WATCH: LeBron James, United States: The NBA's all-time scoring leader seeks his third Olympic gold medal (2008, 2012) and returns to the Games for the first time in 12 years. At 39, James presumably is playing in his final Olympics. Kevin Durant, United States: He is seeking to become the first four-time men's basketball gold medalist, after helping the U.S. win gold at Tokyo in 2021, Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and London in 2012. Victor Wembanyama, France: The NBA rookie of the year and runner-up for defensive player of the year (behind French teammate Rudy Gobert) will be one of the faces of the Paris Games. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Canada: The runner-up in this season's NBA MVP voting behind Nikola Jokic of Serbia (another likely Olympic player this summer) will be asked to help deliver Canada a medal. It's not out of reach, as proven by Canada's bronze at the World Cup last summer. Ste

Germany wins maiden Basketball World Cup, holds off Serbia 83-77 for gold

Have a summer, Germany. Dirk Nowitzki went into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and now his homeland stands atop the men's international basketball world. Dennis Schroder scored 28 points, Franz Wagner added 19 and Germany capped off an unbeaten run through the World Cup by holding off Serbia 83-77 in the final on Sunday night. It was Germany's first World Cup title; before now, its top showing in the event was a bronze at Indianapolis in 2002. Germany went 8-0 in the tournament, becoming the fifth consecutive champion to go unbeaten. Aleksa Avramovic scored 21 and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 17 for Serbia (6-2), which lost the title game for the second time in the last three tournaments. It was routed by the U.S. 129-92 in the 2014 gold-medal game, and little was expected of the team this summer merely because its best player, Nikola Jokic of the NBA champion Denver Nuggets, decided not to play and instead opted to rest for the coming season. But Serbia went on a surprise run, fueled by

Basketball World Cup 2023: Having stunned USA, Germany eye historic gold

Serbia has a chance for its biggest win in 21 years. Canada is seeking its first medal at a major global tournament in 87 years. Germany is one win away from its biggest basketball accomplishment, ever. And then, there's the US, playing for bronze. The Basketball World Cup a 32-team odyssey that played out in three countries over the last 2 weeks ends in Manila on Sunday with the medal games. It's an all-European final with Germany (7-0) facing Serbia (6-1) for gold and an all-North American matchup with Canada (5-2) playing the US (5-2) for the bronze. The world is good at basketball, US point guard and captain Jalen Brunson said Saturday at the team's final practice of the summer. Respect everybody. Germany and Serbia have certainly earned tons of respect and will be on the medal podium together just as they were at the 2002 world championships; Serbia won its most recent world title in that event (as the former Yugoslavia) while Germany got what, until now, was its first and o

9 people hurt in Denver shooting after Nuggets' NBA win, suspect in custody

Nine people were injured in a shooting early Tuesday in Denver in an area where basketball fans had been celebrating the Nuggets first NBA title win, police said, and a suspect was taken into custody. The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. and three of the injured were in critical condition, the Denver Police Department said in a statement. The shooting happened about a mile from Ball Arena, where the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat on Monday night. As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that's still under investigation at this time," police spokesperson Doug Schepman said. "It did occur in the area area where we had largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night. A small crowd was in the area at the time of the shooting, he said, but had diminished quite a bit at that point. He said the shooting was in an area where a lot of people might have come out of bars after the game. Police were interviewing witnesses and Schepman descri

FIBA picks Qatar to host its marquee 2027 World Cup in men's basketball

Qatar is going to host another World Cup. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on Friday picked Qatar to host the 2027 edition of its marquee men's World Cup. It did not say whether there were any other bidders. Doha will stage all games in the 32-team event, FIBA said, citing upgraded subway and public transport networks that were completed for the men's soccer World Cup played last November and December. Qatar faced fierce criticism during a massive, 12-year construction project preparing for the soccer World Cup over its treatment of a migrant labour force that was essential for the building work. FIBA made no reference to labor or human rights issues in announcing its decision on the eve of the 2023 tournament draw. "With all of the teams playing in the same city, fans can plan everything far in advance and enjoy a unique experience since all venues are within 30 minutes of each other," the Switzerland-based governing body said. "Additionally, all venues to be used
