State-owned NALCO on Monday said the ongoing expansion of refinery and plans for upcoming expansion of smelter have been propelled with operationalisation of allotted coal blocks and clearances for Pottangi bauxite mine. Backward integration and securitisation of energy and bauxite has increased the business span of the National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) for the next 30 years, its Chairman and Managing Director Sridhar Patra said. He was speaking at the company's 44th Foundation Day. "The strenuous efforts of the last 43 years and constant pursuit towards exhibiting excellence in almost all domains of business has succeeded in creating a formidable business enterprise like NALCO and the company has always striven to do better than the previous set benchmarks. Hindalco Industries Ltd on Thursday said it will enter into a pact with the Odisha Mining Corporation for long-term supply of Bauxite ore. The company plans to secure Bauxite ore for its proposed 2-million tonnes alumina refinery and 150-MW captive power plant at Kansariguda, Rayagada district, in Odisha. This will be Hindalco's second alumina refining plant in the Rayagada district of Odisha. "Hindalco Industries will be entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Odisha Mining Corporation for the long-term supply of Bauxite ore for its proposed 2-million tonnes alumina refinery and 150-MW captive power plant at Kansariguda in the Rayagada district," the company said in a regulatory filing. The total proposed investment of Rs 8,000 crore will be in two phases. The first phase of one million tonnes is likely to be commissioned in FY'27, at an investment of Rs 5,500 crore. Hindalco is one of the country's leading aluminium manufacturing companies.
Miners' body FIMI has sought withdrawal of export duty on bauxite, stating that the move will lead to optimum utilisation of low-grade mineral resources as it will expedite reopening of closed bauxite mines, create jobs and earn foreign exchange. Bauxite is the principal ore of aluminum and therefore the mineral is the essential raw material for aluminium producers. "The export duty of 15 per cent on bauxite is detrimental to the Indian non- metallurgical bauxite producers and exporters...This Federation therefore request for complete withdrawal of export duty on exports of bauxite," FIMI said in its pre-Budget proposals to the finance ministry. India, it said, is not only self-sufficient in meeting its requirement but has huge potential to be a major player in the international bauxite market.
