He might have reversed his ODI retirement decision to play the World Cup but England Test captain Ben Stokes would like to "think hard" about his future in 50-over format after his impending knee surgery. The England Test captain will undergo a surgery to fix his dodgy left knee later this month as he would be running against time to be fit for a busy calendar ahead beginning with the five-match series in India slated from January 25 in Hyderabad. "I'm Test captain, got a lot of stuff coming up," Stokes told Sky Sports on whether he would like to remain in England's scheme of things for their ODI team reboot. "There's a lot of stuff that I want to do with that Test team and that'll be a decision that probably I'll have to think about quite hard," he said. Stokes also has a million and half pound IPL contract with CSK and he would need to check out on his workload. "It goes back to my initial reason for stepping away from this format, (it) was just through workload... But who knows
Set to go under the knife to address his nagging knee injury, England Test captain Ben Stokes is likely to seek release from IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, keeping in mind his country's packed calender in red-ball cricket. It is also understood that Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led franchise wouldn't mind giving him release considering there could be remote chances of him bowling in all CSK games. The 32-year-old, who was picked by CSK for a whopping Rs 16.25 crore in the last mini-auction, could participate in only two games in 2023 after suffering a toe injury. He played purely as a batter for England in the ongoing ODI World Cup. Stokes is set to undergo surgery to address his knee as he aims to regain fitness for the upcoming Test series against India, beginning January 24. England will play five Tests in India with the final match scheduled to be held from March 7 to 11. Next year's IPL is likely to be held from last week of March till end of May. India lacking a seam bowler who can also bat is the crucial ingredient missing on the team's overseas assignments, feels former England captain Nasser Hussain, and adds that someone like a Ben Stokes or a Cameron Green can be the winning formula for the side on foreign tours. India lost their second consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final to Australia recently and Hussain said that Rishabh Pant was being sorely missed by India, hoping that the wicketkeeper-batter returns to the side sooner rather than later as he is a "massive miss at the moment". "They (India) are brilliant at home... and the balance of their side at home is just wonderful," Hussain said in the ICC Review on Wednesday.
