Talismanic India captain Sunil Chhetri was in sublime form as he struck a brace to help Bengaluru FC beat Mumbai City FC 4-2 in an eventful Indian Super League match here on Monday. Chhetri scored in the 57th and 90th minutes of his 200th game for the club while Cleiton Silva also bagged a double (1st, 22nd). Adam Le Fondre (50th, 72nd) scored the two goals for Mumbai City FC, who have already qualified for the play-offs. Mumbai City remained on second spot with 34 points from 17 matches while Bengaluru FC jumped to sixth with 22 points from 18 matches. Mumbai City had 23 shots in the match, the most they have had in the entire season, but they just couldn't get the result they were looking for. Instead, it was a rejuvenated Bengaluru FC side that walked away with three points. It took just 25 seconds for BFC to take the lead with Silva scoring the fastest goal of the season and second-fastest in the history of the league. After getting the ball in midfield, Chhetri released Udan

ISL-7: NorthEast, Bengaluru see winless streaks continue in stalemate

NorthEast United and Bengaluru FC saw their winless streaks continue as they played out a drab 1-1 draw in the Hero Indian Super League here on Tuesday. Luis Machado (27') opened the scoring for the Highlanders but Rahul Bheke (49') cancelled out his goal after the break to help the Blues salvage a point. The result meant Gerard Nus' side are now winless in seven games, while Bengaluru saw their four-game losing streak end but with a draw at the Tilak Maidan Stadium. NEUFC and Bengaluru both made three changes each to their eleven. However, the Highlanders were forced to make a late change before the whistle with Lalengmawia replacing the injured Lalrempuia Fanai. Bengaluru started the game strongly but despite dominating possession, they entered the break trailing a goal down against their opponents, who created better chances. Machado put NEUFC ahead with a brilliant strike, after netting a brace against the Blues in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Federico Gallego ...

ISL 2020-21: Mumbai City breeze past Bengaluru FC with clinical win

Mumbai City FC extended their unbeaten run in the Hero Indian Super League with a comfortable 3-1 win over Bengaluru FC at the Fatorda Stadium on Tuesday. Goals from Mourtada Fall (9'), Bipin Singh (15') and Bartholomew Ogbeche (84') helped the Islanders remain unbeaten in their last eight games and climb to the top of the table. Sunil Chhetri (79') scored late but it wasn't enough to rescue BFC, who have now suffered three straight league defeats for the first time ever since they joined the elite tier of Indian football. Bengaluru made just one change from their previous encounter as Deshorn Brown came in to replace Erik Paartalu while Mumbai coach Sergio Lobera named an unchanged XI from the 2-0 win over Kerala Blasters. BFC squandered an early chance when Brown was set through on goal, but with just the keeper at his mercy, the 30-year-old fired over the crossbar. Unlike BFC, Mumbai didn't miss their chance and took the lead in the ninth minute. Bipin's looped corner was heade

ISL 7: Bengaluru FC face tough Mumbai test in bid to reverse fortunes

A struggling Bengaluru FC will have their task cut out when they take on formidable Mumbai City FC in a bid to reverse their fortunes in the Indian Super League here on Tuesday. Mumbai are enjoying a dream run this season, remaining unbeaten in their last seven matches and maintaining clean sheets in their last two games. On the other hand, for the first time in the history of ISL, BFC have failed to score in consecutive games, losing to ATK Mohun Bagan and Jamshedpur FC in their previous two fixtures. "We had some more time this week and we will try to fight for three points again," Bengaluru coach Carles Cuadrat said on the eve of the match. "In the last two games, the team was trying to create chances to score but unfortunately, we lost some dynamics. "The good thing is we got some goals from other players. That means that the team is working to get goals from different players and is not dependent on a specific player," he added. Bengaluru have scored 11 goals this season but

ISL-7: ATK Mohun Bagan aim to end Bengaluru FC's unbeaten run

An absorbing contest is on the cards when two in-form teams ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC clash each other in the Indian Super League, here on Monday. While ATKMB boast of a strong attacking line-up, they have even better defensive statistics. Bengaluru's figures aren't bad either. They are yet to taste a defeat in the campaign. Though aware of the challenge that awaits for his side, ATKMB coach Antonio Habas has his sights set on nothing less than three points. "I think it's impossible to win every match. The teams are more balanced and it's very difficult for all teams to keep on winning three points," said Habas. "The idea in football is to get three points. I cannot play thinking about the possibility of drawing or losing." ATKMB's defenders have the most number of tackles in the league (233) and have also made the second-most clearances in the league (182). "The idea is marking in the zone and closing down the spaces. You need space for crosses and to create moves. The id

ISL-7: Bengaluru FC clip Kerala Blasters' wings in six-goal thriller

Bengaluru FC walked away with three points after a 4-2 win over Kerala Blasters in their high-scoring Indian Super League match here on Sunday. The second half saw four goals being scored in the span of 14 minutes. Erik Paartalu (51st) and Dimas Delgado (53rd) scored in quick succession to give Bengaluru FC breathing space but Jordan Murray (61st) gave some hope to the away team. Sunil Chhetri (65th) put the game to rest with a fine header. Bengaluru started sharper than their previous displays with Chhetri and Kristian Opseth showing confidence and flair every time they got on the ball. But it was Kerala, who had the first shot on target. Facundo Pereyra, with great vision, spotted Jordan Murray with a through ball, slicing open the Blues defence. Murray took a touch and shot at goal but Bengaluru's Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced a di

Machado's twin strike help NorthEast salvage 2-2 draw against Bengaluru

Luis Machado struck twice as NorthEast United salvaged a thrilling 2-2 draw against Bengaluru FC in an Indian Super League fixture here on Tuesday. Gerard Nus' men took an early lead through a fortuitous strike from Machado (4th) but Bengaluru hit back through Juanan (13th) and substitute Udanta Singh (70th). Just as the Blues looked set for a win, Machado (78th) struck again to ensure his team got a point. NEUFC got off to the best possible start when they scored in just the fourth minute. Rochharzela cut into the box and unleashed a shot at goal. His strike struck his teammate Machado and Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu could only look on in despair as the ball looped in. But rather than get pegged down by the early goal, Bengaluru responded with a flurry of attacks and eventually found their equaliser as NEUFC's lead last just over ten minutes. A Rahul Bheke throw caused all sorts of chaos in the NEUFC box and it fell to Juanan, whose first-time shot found the back
