German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrives in Delhi to boost bilateral ties

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived here on Thursday as part of his three-day official visit to India during which he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in wide-ranging talks on strategic ties in several key areas. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a post on X said, "Olaf Scholz of Germany lands in New Delhi for the 7th Intergovernmental Consultations and the 18th Asia Pacific Conference of German Business (APK 2024)." The Chancellor, who arrived late Thursday night, was received by Ministry of State Home Affairs Nityanand Rai. The MEA had in a statement earlier said that Scholz will pay an official visit to India from October 24 to 26 at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi. The two leaders will hold wide-ranging talks with a focus on boosting bilateral strategic ties, including in the areas of defence, trade, and clean energy. Prez Murmu arrives in Malawi on last leg of three-nation visit to Africa

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Malawi on Thursday on the final leg of her three-nation visit to Africa, during which she will hold talks with the country's top leadership and interact with trade and industry leaders. It is the first visit to the African nation by an Indian Head of State. India eases certain conditions for UAE in bilateral investment treaty: GTRI

India has eased certain conditions for UAE in the bilateral investment treaty by including portfolio investments and reduction in the local remedies exhaustion period from five years to three years in the pact, economic think tank GTRI said on Monday. The India-UAE Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) came into force on August 31 this year. The model BIT requires investors to attempt to resolve disputes through India's legal system for at least five years before seeking international arbitration. In contrast, the India-UAE BIT reduces this period to three years, giving investors quicker access to Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS). "While this makes the treaty more investor-friendly, it also weakens India's ability to settle disputes domestically, increasing the likelihood of arbitration cases that could challenge India's regulatory decisions," the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said in a statement.
