GBA becomes the third multilateral initiative launched by the Central government
Global Biofuel Alliance, G20 Satellite Mission for Environment and Climate Observation, and Green Credit Initiative among initiatives launched under India's G20 Summit presidency
The main aim of GBA is to accelerate the transition to sustainable biofuels and reduce the world's dependence on traditional fossil fuels
India's proposal for setting up a Global Biofuels Alliance is likely to get through at the G20 summit with sources indicating that the new grouping may be launched on Saturday to help accelerate energy transition. A group photo of the G20 world leaders may take place on the first day of the summit on Saturday after it begins at Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the two-day summit, sources said. The Global Biofuels Alliance, which the world's third biggest oil consumer wants to push during its G20 presidency, mirrors the International Solar Alliance (ISA) piloted by New Delhi and Paris in 2015 to bring clean and affordable solar energy within the reach of all. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told PTI in an exclusive interview that India's proposal for a global alliance on biofuels among members of the Group of 20 major economies will help accelerate sustainable biofuels deployment in support of the global energy transition. "Such alliances are aimed at creating options
Digital platform for biomass and biofuels BiofuelCircle has collaborated with Indian School of Business (ISB) to strengthen forest economy in the country. The collaboration aims to establish large-scale, efficient, and sustainable value chains in the bioenergy sector, utilizing forests as a reliable and eco-friendly source of raw materials, specifically selected non-timber forest products/seasonal forest products, a statement said. This partnership signifies the shared vision of BiofuelCircle and ISB to promote sustainable bioenergy and create sources of income for local communities. The collaboration shall combine community forest ownership, establish formal industry linkages and government partnerships to achieve this vision. ISB is currently implementing this initiative in three states across India. The pilots will serve as laboratories to develop a scalable and sustainable solution for procurement of forest-based industrial raw materials through multistakeholder partnerships ..

BiofuelCircle has signed an agreement with Pune Knowledge Cluster (PKC) to provide access to non-agricultural sources of biofuels to industries. BiofuelCircle is the first digital marketplace for biomass and biofuels, while PKC is one of six science & technology clusters established by the office of the principal scientific adviser to the Government of India under The City Knowledge and Innovation Cluster Initiative. In a statement, BiofuelCircle said it "has signed an MoU with PKC for innovating alternatives to agri residue-based bio-energy. The objective is to develop projects that provide industries with access to non-agricultural sources of biofuels as alternatives." The initiative will augment the current sources of biofuels and help boost rural economy, rejuvenate degraded land and be an important step towards energy independence of the country, it said. As part of the agreement, the two organisations will work together towards setting up projects with large industrial ...
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has adopted interim guidance on the use of biofuels and biofuel blends, a resolution vehemently pushed by India at a maritime environment protection conference here. The London-based IMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent pollution from ships. The interim guidance adopted on Thursday at the 80th Session of the Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO stressed that biofuels that have been certified by an international certification scheme, meeting its sustainability criteria and provide a well-to-wake GHG emissions reduction of at least 65 per cent compared to the fossil fuels can be used in the shipping industry. With this guidance coming into effect, India has great potential to be developed as a biofuel hub of the world. "We, with our highly sustainable second-generation biofuel, are the leaders i

India's draft resolution on biofuels at the 80th session of the MEPC of International Maritime Organisation was on Tuesday referred to the Working Group for its consideration and finalisation. The draft Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) resolution put forward a biofuel certified by the International Certification Scheme to confirm the sustainability aspects in the Life Cycle Assessment guidelines are being assigned a CO2 emission conversion factor as zero. The resolution is aimed at facilitating the uptake of biofuels and reducing GHG emissions and was taken up for discussion in the plenary on Tuesday. India welcomed the decision of the Chair to refer the draft resolution to the Working Group for its consideration and finalisation. "We believe India would be able to reason out our position on the need of this Resolution to encourage uptake of Biofuels," said Ajithkumar Sukumaran, Chief Surveyor-cum-Additional Directorate General, Ministry of Shipping, representing In
The US on Monday became the only country to halt the adoption of a draft MEPC resolution on biofuel put forward by India on Monday at the MEPC session here, demanding further discussions on the matter prior to recommending it to a working group on air pollution and energy efficiency to finalise the resolution/circular. Sources told PTI that the US came up with the suggestion on Monday morning at the 80th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) without raising it in earlier deliberations when the vast majority of the group considered it an immediate requirement and to be considered further by the Intersessional Working Group on Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency Sources said the opposition raised by the US could be due to the fact that promoting bio-fuel as a drop in fuel could negatively impact the promotion of other green fuels such as Ammonia and Hydrogen, the fuels that the US is putting money on. India's draft MEPC resolution put forward a biofuel that is

Petrol doped with 20 per cent ethanol was rolled out on Monday at select petrol pumps in 11 states and union territories as part of a programme to increase use of biofuels to cut emissions as well as dependence on foreign exchange-draining imports. At present, 10 per cent ethanol is blended in petrol (10 per cent ethanol, 90 per cent petrol) and the government is looking to double this quantity by 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the higher 20 per cent ethanol blended petrol two months ahead of the planned rollout in April, at the India Energy Week (IEW) 2023 here. "We have increased ethanol blending in petrol from 1.5 per cent (in 2014) to 10 per cent and are now progressing towards 20 per cent blending," Modi said. In the first phase, 15 cities will be covered and in the next two years it will be expanded throughout the country. India saved as much as Rs 53,894 crore in forex outgo from 10 per cent blending besides benefiting the farmers. E-20 (petrol with 20 per cen
