BIS to prioritise development of standards for 214 critical medical devices

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Monday said it is prioritising development of standards for 214 critical medical devices, which are set for phased completion by December 2025. These devices, which include septal closure devices, plasma sterilizers, and phototherapy machines, are in line with the National Medical Device Policy, 2023 and have been identified in consultation with Department of Pharmaceuticals. BIS, in a statement, said the national standards body is developing standards for innovative products such as therapeutic footwear, portable ramps, braille displays, and fall detectors, which support individuals with disabilities. BIS has published over 1,700 standards for the medical sector, covering specialities such as cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, and more. Govt rolls out mandatory norms for helmets for police, water dispensers

The government has issued mandatory quality norms for helmets for police force, bottled water dispensers, and door fittings to curb the import of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing of these goods. Three separate notifications -- Helmets for Police Force, Civil Defence and Personal Protection (Quality Control) Order, 2023, Bottled Water Dispensers (Quality Control) Order, 2023, and Door Fittings (Quality Control) Order, 2023 -- were issued in this regard by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on October 23. Under these orders, items cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark. Govt rolls out quality mandate for copper products, drums, tin containers

The government has issued mandatory quality norms for copper products, drums and tin containers to curb the import of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing of these goods, an official statement said on Monday. Two separate notifications - Drums and Tins (Quality Control) Order, 2023; and Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023 - in this regard were issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on October 20. Items under these two orders cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark. These orders will come into force with effect from six months from the date of publication of this notification, the DPIIT said. BIS norms: Footwear, allied industries conduct nationwide protest

Footwear manufacturers and allied industries from 13 states held a protest, dissenting against the Central government's imposition of BIS quality certification on all kinds of footwear. The nationwide protest was organised by the All India MSME Footwear Council on Wednesday. The state-level protest was held at Modern Industrial Estate in Kozhikode, a statement said here on Thursday. As many as 400 small-scale footwear units also took part in the protest across Kerala. Industry leaders and MSME owners pointed out that the government's decision was neither practical nor scientific, it said. BIS developed 9 standards for biofuels, working on paraffinic green diesel

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Monday said it has developed as many as nine standards on biofuels, and is in the process of developing a standard on paraffinic (green) diesel. BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said, these standards will significantly complement the objectives of Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA), the multilateral forum announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 leaders' summit held recently in the national capital. "We are committed to support this path breaking initiative of the government through development of relevant Indian Standards and necessary quality parameters/performance specifications," he said in a statement. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has reached out to 2.4 lakh village panchayats so far to create awareness about Indian standards at the grassroot levels. Plastic is not a 100 per cent biodegradable product and if any manufacturers claim otherwise it will tantamount to misleading advertisement, a top BIS official said on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has suggested the Environment Ministry not to certify biodegradability of plastics as it has not been established and research are still going on in India and other countries. It would be a fit case of "misleading advertisement" if any manufacturers claims that its plastic products are 100 per cent biodegradable, he added. "It has not been established whether the plastic is actually 100 per cent biodegradable. The Centre on Monday directed state governments to enforce Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) certification on consumer products while stressing the use of digital technology to protect consumer rights and reduce pending cases in consumer courts. After inaugurating a day-long workshop on "Consumer Protection in the northern states" held in Chandigarh, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh emphasized the role of technology in strengthening the consumer protection ecosystem and the importance of infrastructure and human resources in consumer commissions. BIS framing standards for yoga equipment amid rising yoga popularity

Amid the growing popularity of yoga across the world, the government's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Tuesday said it is framing standards for yoga equipment and some traditional herbal medicines on request from the Ayush Ministry. Addressing a press conference, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said the Bureau has already framed standards on the glossary of yoga terminology, yoga mat and yoga centre. "We are also working on yoga equipment like the one used for jal neti kriya as well as some traditional herbal medicines," he said. Already standards for 17 herbs out of identified 34 have been published, he said.
