Xi Jinping to attend BRICS summit in South Africa followed by state visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend next week's summit of the BRICS nations in Johannesburg, to be followed by a state visit to South Africa, the Foreign Ministry said Friday. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying also said in a statement that during his Aug 21-24 visit to South Africa, Xi will co-chair the China-Africa Leaders' Dialogue with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa. China is a core member of the BRICS nations, which also include Brazil, Russia and India. The grouping was predicated on linking the interests of the world's leading emerging economies but has sought to expand into other civil and governmental fields. Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided not to attend the summit because of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for him, according to South African authorities. The development could be viewed as embarrassing for Putin, who is expected to be the only leader of a country in the bloc not to attend. Kremlin ...

PM Modi to attend BRICS Summit in South Africa: Foreign Minister Pandor

The South African government on Monday confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the next BRICS Summit to be held here from August 22 in person, dismissing some media reports as "rumours" that the Indian leader will not be present at the meeting. Briefing the media on South Africa's preparations for the 15th edition of the summit, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor told journalists that the leaders of Brazil, China, India and hosts South Africa will participate in a range of discussions. Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate virtually, due to an ICC warrant which would have obliged South Africa to arrest him if he came in person. I did speak to various colleagues in government and outside, and everybody was astounded by this rumour. I think that someone who is trying to spoil our Summit is creating all sorts of stories that suggest that it won't be successful, Pandor said as she confirmed Modi's attendance. The Prime Ministe

India's rise from colonialism worth in-depth analysis: S Africa minister

India's rise from the ashes of colonialism to becoming a tech giant today is worth an in-depth analysis, a South African minister said at a BRICS summit on Wednesday. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Minister in the presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, hailed India's rise in the global economy. "The Indian civilisation, which spans thousands of years, and the country's rise and development from the ashes of colonialism should be looked at closely," she told delegates from the BRICS bloc at the BRICS Youth Summit in Durban. The summit is one of a range of preparatory meetings for the 15th BRICS Summit to be attended by leaders of the member countries in Johannesburg next month. The BRICS bloc comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. EAM calls on BRICS nations to demonstrate sincerity in reforming UNSC

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday called on BRICS nations to demonstrate their sincerity in reforming multilateral institutions, including that of the UN Security Council. India has been at the forefront of the UN to push for an urgent long-pending reform of the Security Council. "For two decades, we have heard calls for reform of multilateral institutions, only to be continuously disappointed. It is, therefore, imperative that BRICS members demonstrate sincerity in regard to reforming global decision-making, including that of the UN Security Council," he said in his opening remarks at the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting here. The five-nation grouping BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) brings together five of the largest developing countries of the world. Jaishankar said that at the heart of the problems the countries face is the economic concentration that leaves too many nations at the mercy of too few.
