The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's accelerated approval program is meant to give patients early access to promising drugs. But how often do these drugs actually improve or extend patients' lives? In a new study, researchers found that most cancer drugs granted accelerated approval do not demonstrate such benefits within five years. Five years after the initial accelerated approval, you should have a definitive answer, said Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a cancer specialist and bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the research. Poonam Pandey on Saturday made an appearance on social media and said she is "alive", a day after there were reports that the actor had died of cervical cancer. First state-of-the-art cancer hospital to be built in Hamirpur: CM Sukhu

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday said the first state-of-the-art cancer hospital will be established in Hamirpur to effectively deal with the ailment. Presiding over the 'Sarkar Gaon Ke Dwar' programme at Kanjyan village under the Bhoranj assembly constituency of Hamirpur district, the chief minister said the increasing cancer cases in Himachal Pradesh is a matter of concern. "The state is witnessing an increase of 2.2 per cent of the cancer patients while the country's average rate is 0.6 per cent" he said. Talking to the media later on the sidelines of the programme, Sukhu said that the results of various examinations conducted by the dissolved Himachal Pradesh Staff Selection Commission (HPSSC) would be declared soon by the government. He said the government is also going to issue appointment letters within a month to those examinations whose results have been declared. Fortis launches institute for specialised treatment of blood cancer

A well-known private healthcare group, Fortis on Friday inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility for the specialised treatment of blood cancers and disorders, which it said "represented a critical step" in addressing the urgent need for comprehensive holistic care. The Fortis Institute of Blood Disorders also integrates paediatric and geriatric care, advanced transplant procedures, and hematopathology expertise, all under one roof, Fortis Healthcare said in a release. The Institute also launched CAR-T cell therapy to its extensive network of Bone Marrow Transplant centres in Mohali, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai and Bangalore, the statement said. Guwahati Refinery, Tata Cancer Care ink MoU for special medical equipment

The Guwahati Refinery on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tata Cancer Care Foundation for providing special medical equipment to Silchar Cancer Centre in Assam. Under the agreement, Guwahati Refinery will extend a financial support of Rs 16.39 crore for procuring medical equipment like LINAC for delivering external beam radiation therapy, treatment planning system-computer based software system used in radiation oncology, dosimetry and immobilisation devices, a release said. G K Goyari, Chief General Manager and Refinery Head expressed happiness to be a part of the collaboration, and hoped that the support would further help cancer patients of the northeast region in availing affordable treatment. Silchar Cancer Centre is located on the Silchar Medical College and Hospital campus, and caters not only to patients of Assam but those from Tripura, Mizoram and parts of Meghalaya as well, the release added.

ICICI Bank on Friday committed Rs 1,200 crore to help Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) to expand its cancer treating facilities. As part of the commitment from ICICI Foundation, three new facilities will be built in Navi Mumbai's Kharghar on the outskirts of the financial capital, Mullanpur in Punjab and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Girish Chandra Chaturvedi, the chairman of the second largest private sector lender, said the three facilities will be fully functional by 2027 and will enable TMC to handle 25,000 more cancer patients per year. "This is a step towards resolving a problem which we are foreseeing to aggravate, especially as urbanisation increases," he told reporters at TMC's flagship hospital here after signing three Memorandums of Understanding for the centre.
