New gender-specific proteins could detect early-stage cancers, shows study

A sex-specific group of ten plasma proteins were found to detect 18 different early-stage cancers, representing all major organs of the body, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal Oncology. Researchers said that while cancers of kidney in men and colon in women were easier to detect using their test, bladder cancer in women and thyroid cancer in men were "more challenging but achieved with relatively high accuracy after optimisation". The proteins could also detect liver and ovarian cancers, among others. The research team at Novelna Inc, the US company that designed the test, found that while each of these proteins, by itself, was only moderately accurate at picking up the disease at an early stage, it was highly accurate when combined with other proteins in the group. They said that these proteins were particularly effective at picking up early-stage disease, even as they showed an ability to pick up stage I-III disease and all types of cancer. The team sa

Karnataka govt, AstraZeneca to deploy AI-based lung cancer screening

The Karnataka government on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AstraZeneca Pharma India Ltd., to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) based lung cancer screening technology that will screen a patient for 29 lung diseases in one chest X-ray. This AI-powered chest X-ray system developed by healthtech startup 'Qure.ai' will help the government detect lung nodules, often precursors to lung cancer, in 19 district hospitals in Karnataka, overcoming a major early detection challenge, officials said. The MoU was inked by National Health Mission, Health & Family Welfare Services, on behalf of the government, in the presence of Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cancer can be treated with curative intent if detected early. We are bringing this technology in all our district hospitals across Karnataka, and we strongly believe that this will emerge as the most beneficial way of detecting lung cancer early and bringing down the financial and emotional burden of healthcare ..

Multi-cancer blood test shows promise of quicker diagnosis in UK: NHS

A National Health Service (NHS) trial of a new blood test for more than 50 types of cancer has shown promise after it correctly revealed two out of every three cancers in people who had visited their general practitioner (GP) with suspected symptoms in England or Wales, the University of Oxford researchers said on Friday. The so-called Galleri test also correctly identified the original site of cancer in 85 per cent of those cases in what has been described as the first large-scale evaluation of a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test in individuals who presented to their GP for diagnostic follow-up for suspected cancer. The SIMPLIFY study enrolled 6,238 patients, aged 18 and older, who were referred for urgent imaging, endoscopy or other diagnostic modalities to investigate symptoms suspicious for possible gynaecological, lung, lower GI or upper GI cancer, or who had presented with non-specific symptoms. New tools that can both expedite cancer diagnosis and potentially avoid ...
