Reduction in carbon emission due to Central govt's initiatives: Minister

India has witnessed a significant reduction in carbon emissions because of the Narendra Modi government's initiatives, Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey said on Wednesday. Under phase-2 of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme launched in 2019, 5.80 lakh two-wheelers, 74,063 electric three-wheelers, 6,784 four wheelers and 3,738 buses have been sold, he said. "Carbon emission in the country saw a 49 crore kg reduction, while over 34 crore litre petrol and diesel was also saved by the special initiatives of the Modi government, said the Minister of Heavy Industries at a press conference at the BJP headquarters. Highlighting the Modi government's achievements, Pandey said, "We have provided funds to the petroleum ministry for setting up 7,432 charging stations for electric vehicles at petrol pumps on highways." In the nine years of the Modi government, Pandey said various reforms were initiated to create a favourable atmosphere for the growth of .

Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel set for continued growth: IATA

As efforts continue to reduce carbon emissions, international airlines' grouping IATA on Tuesday said the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is set for continued growth with a wide geographic footprint spread across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects overall renewable fuel production to reach an estimated capacity of at least 69 billion litres (55 million tonnes) by 2028. The grouping of more than 300 airlines has also pitched for production incentives to support the aviation industry's energy transition as well as for continued approval for more diversification of methods and feedstocks available for SAF production. With these two measures successfully in place, the expected 2028 production levels would be realistically aligned with recently published roadmaps to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, IATA Director General Willie Walsh said. According to IATA, SAF will comprise a portion of this growing output,

Over-emitting nations owe India $1,446 per capita as compensation: Study

Industrialised nations of the Global North, such as the US and Germany, are responsible for 90 percent of excessive levels of carbon dioxide emissions, and could be liable to pay a total of USD 170 trillion in compensation to low-emitters like India to ensure climate change targets are met by 2050, according to a new study. India is owed an annual compensation of USD 1,446 per capita until 2050 and a yearly compensation equivalent to 66 percent of its GDP in 2018, the study published in Nature Sustainability on Monday says. The researchers from University of Leeds, the UK, analysed 168 countries and quantified historical responsibility for climate breakdown, based on excess carbon dioxide emissions beyond equality-based fair shares of global carbon budgets. Climate science defines carbon budget as the amount of greenhouse gases that can be emitted for a given level of global warming (1.5 degree Celsius in this case). They proposed an evidence-based compensation mechanism that takes

'Common but differentiated responsibility' must guide ICAO towards net zero

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) should continue to be guided by "common but differentiated responsibilities" in the efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions for the aviation sector, India said on Wednesday. India is one of the fastest-growing and the third largest civil aviation market in the world. At an ICAO symposium in Seoul on Wednesday, Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said that based on "realities and infrastructure constraints", India has set a target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. "In achieving the net zero goal, ICAO should continue to be guided by common but differentiated responsibilities," Bansal said. In an official statement issued at the Global Implementation Support Symposium 2023, the secretary said the transition towards a lower carbon and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) will be fundamental to achieving the net zero target by 2050. "The process of SAF legislation, regulation, production, and deployment is external to civi

ONGC to invest Rs 1 trn in energy transition by 2030; net-zero by 2038

India's top oil and gas producer ONGC will invest Rs 1 lakh crore by 2030 on energy transition projects as it targets net zero carbon emissions by 2038, its chairman Arun Kumar Singh said on Monday. The firm joins fellow state-owned oil and gas firms Indian Oil (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), GAIL and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) in preparing roadmaps for net zero emissions as part of the nation's commitment to deal with the climate challenge. Net-zero for a company means achieving a balance between the quantum of greenhouse gases it places into atmosphere and the amount it takes out. "We have done our internal workings and are now confident that we can achieve net-zero for Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions by 2038," Singh told reporters here. The company is planning to scale up electricity generation from renewable sources from 189 MW to 1 GW by 2030. It already has 5 GW of project planned in Rajasthan and is scouting for a similar capacity, he said adding ONGC would also look at offsho

World Bank team expresses interest in Kerala's carbon-neutral initiatives

A World Bank team, led by Vice President for South Asia Region Martin Raiser, held discussions with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and expressed interest in projects that the state plans to implement to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. After the meeting, Raiser said Kerala was urbanising rapidly, and this will create more challenges in the future due to the rising level of carbon emissions, particularly from the transport sector. "So, one of the areas in which Kerala wants to make further progress is to green its transport system," Raiser told PTI. He said the state should tap renewable energy resources to meet its energy needs. "It has a lot of potential for solar," the World Bank official said. Raiser said during his meeting with the chief minister and some of his Cabinet colleagues, he emphasised the need for implementing e-mobility by adopting electric and fuel cell-based electric vehicles for developing a green eco-system in the state. He, however, admitted that it

EPA proposes new limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants

The Biden administration proposed new limits on Thursday on greenhouse gas emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants, its most ambitious effort yet to roll back planet-warming pollution from the nation's second-largest contributor to climate change. A rule unveiled by the Environmental Protection Agency could force power plants to capture smokestack emissions using a technology that has long been promised but is not in widespread use in the US. "This administration is committed to meeting the urgency of the climate crisis and taking the necessary actions required,' EPA Administrator Michael Regan said during Thursday's announcement. The new rule will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired power plants, protecting health and protecting our planet," Regan said. The plan would not only improve air quality nationwide, but it will bring substantial health benefits to communities all across the country, especially our frontline communities ... that hav
