K'taka CM, Dy CM inform Jal Shakti Min inability to release water to TN

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday called on Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat here and informed him of the state's inability to comply with the CWMA's order of releasing 5,000 cusecs of water per day till September 28 to Tamil Nadu, citing a drought-like situation. The meeting came in the backdrop of protests by farmers bodies against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. However, the Supreme Court on Thursday refused to interfere with orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee directing the Karnataka government to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. During the meeting, the Deputy CM also sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to resolve this matter by convening a meeting of four states -- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. BJP MPs, including union ministers Shobha Karanlaje, Bhagawanth Khuba and A Narayanswamy as

Protests erupt in Karnataka as SC refuses to interfere in Cauvery water row

Protests erupted in various parts of Cauvery river basin districts of Karnataka after the Supreme Court refused to interfere with orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, directing the state to release 5,000 cusecs of water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Farmers organisations and pro-Kannada organisations staged protests in Mysuru, Mandya, Bengaluru and other parts expressing their anger and urging the state government not to release water to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene (farmers organisation) staged a protest at Basaveshwara circle in Mysuru, and raised slogans: "Where is water to release? And we demand justice." They have also planned to lay siege to the Command Area Development Authority office in Mysuru, as a mark of protest. Pointing out that Cauvery and Kabini basin taluks have already been declared as drought hit, a farmer leader alleged, CWMA orders are in favour of Tamil Nadu as it is without taking

TN causing unnecessary nuisance over Cauvery water sharing issue: K'taka CM

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday hit out at the BJP-led government at the Centre, alleging delay in giving approval to the construction of the Mekedatu balancing reservoir over river Cauvery, and accused neighbouring Tamil Nadu of causing "unnecessary nuisance" on the issue. Karnataka has been pressing for the implementation of the Mekedatu project, saying it is the only solution for the Cauvery water dispute between the two states during times of rainfall distress. "The BJP government at the Centre has not given permission for the Mekedatu project. Tamil Nadu has no reasons to oppose the project. It is in our territory, 177.25 TMC water has been allocated to Tamil Nadu and we have to release that much water to them in the normal years. And during distress time, the distress formula should be followed," Siddaramaiah said. Speaking to reporters here, he accused Tamil Nadu of unnecessarily creating nuisance regarding the Mekedatu project, and said that despite Karnataka

Mekedatu balancing reservoir only solution to Cauvery dispute: K'taka DCM

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday said the Mekedatu balancing reservoir across the Cauvery river near Kanakapura in Ramanagara district is the only solution to the Cauvery water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Speaking to reporters here, he said the problem arose because the Mekedatu reservoir was not built. "The Mekedatu project is the only solution to the problem of Cauvery water sharing between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. We have informed the Supreme Court about this," the Water Resources Minister said. The Cauvery Management Authority has been constituted by the court itself, which is a technical committee. Now they have to focus on the technical aspects, the DCM said. Making a pitch for the Mekedatu reservoir, he said had it been built, this problem would not have arisen today. Last year, more than 400 TMC water flowed into the sea and was "wasted". If only a small amount of water had been held at Mekedatu reservoir, this .

Cauvery water: SC refuses to pass order on TN govt's plea to direct K'taka

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to pass any order on the Tamil Nadu government's plea seeking release of 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily by Karnataka for irrigating the standing crops. A three-judge bench headed by Justice BR Gavai sought a report from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on the amount of water released by Karnataka, after Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati informed the court that a meeting of the authority is scheduled for Monday. We do not possess any expertise on the matter. The ASG informs that authority is meeting on Monday to decide discharge of water for next fortnight. "We find that it will be appropriate that CWMA submits its report on whether the directions issued for discharge of water have been complied or not, the bench, also comprising Justices PS Narasimha and PK Mishra, said. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, informed the bench that the meeting of CWMA is scheduled to be held on Augus

Karnataka to file appeal in SC on Aug 21 over release of Cauvery water

The Karnataka Cabinet on Saturday directed the Advocate General to file the state's appeal before the Supreme Court on August 21 regarding the release of Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Earlier this week, Tamil Nadu had approached the Supreme Court with a plea to direct Karnataka to release 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily for standing crops. "The Advocate General was invited to today's cabinet. He has been directed to file the state's appeal before the Supreme Court on Monday," Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said. Briefing reporters about the cabinet decisions, Patil said, "He (AG) has been asked to file an appeal with all the detailed information based on the existing situation."
