NGT seeks response from CPCB, MCD on Ghazipur landfill fire incident

The National Green Tribunal has sought a response within five weeks from authorities, including the Central Pollution Control Board and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, on the fire incident at the Ghazipur landfill site last month. The tribunal was hearing the matter after taking suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report regarding the massive fire at the landfill in East Delhi on April 21. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member A Senthil Vel said the news report raised a "substantial issue" relating to compliance with environmental norms. It said a similar blaze had occurred at the site in 2022 and the tribunal in January of the next year levied an environmental compensation of Rs 900 crore on the Delhi government, besides issuing directions for taking remedial measures. Rajya Sabha passes bill to amend water Act to decriminalise minor offences

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a Bill which seeks to decriminalise minor offences related to water pollution, enable the Centre to prescribe service conditions of chairpersons of State Pollution Control Boards, and exempt certain categories of industrial plants from statutory restrictions. Piloting the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Bill 2024 in the Upper House of Parliament, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said that development and environment protection must go together. There should be harmony in ease of living and ease of doing business, he added. Replying to a debate on the Bill, the minister said its provisions will lead to greater transparency in dealing with various issues related to water pollution. The Bill, which seeks to amend the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, was approved by the Rajya Sabha by voice vote. Delhi records 6.7 deg C minimum temperature, dense fog in some areas

Delhi on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, with dense fog in some isolated pockets of the city, according to the India Meteorological Department. Palam area recorded 50-metre visibility at 5.30 am. No dense fog was reported at Delhi Airports at 8.30 am on Saturday. Palam airport reported 800m visibility while Safdarjung reported 1,500 metre visibility, the IMD said. The weather department has forecast dense fog on Saturday. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 20 degrees Celsius, the IMD said, adding that the humidity recorded 95 per cent at 8.30 am. Delhi's air quality at 9 am was recorded in the 'poor' category with a reading of 217, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
