A team of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilisers arrived here on Tuesday on a four-day visit to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, officials said. The team is headed by Lok Sabha MP CN Annadurai and comprises Arun Kumar Sagar, Sanjeev Kumar Singari, Indra Hang Subba, GC Chandrashekhar, and Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, among others. After their arrival, the team members visited the National Memorial Cellular Jail and paid tributes to freedom fighters. Later, they went to Swaraj Dweep (formerly Havelock Island) and held discussions with representatives of the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals on the safe usage of insecticides and pesticides in the archipelago. Chemical manufacturing company Deepak Nitrite on Thursday reported a 36.1 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 149.9 crore for the June quarter. The company's net profit stood at Rs 234.62 crore during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, Deepak Nitrite said in a regulatory filing. Revenue from operations fell 14.07 per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal to Rs 1,768.34 crore compared to Rs 2,057.99 crore in the same period a year ago. On June 2, 2022, the company had said that an incident of fire occurred at one of its manufacturing sites at Nandesari, Gujarat. Property, equipment, and inventory worth crores of rupees were damaged and business was hit, resulting in overall damage of Rs 47.20 crore. India is likely to account for more than a fifth of incremental global consumption for chemicals over the next two decades as domestic demand is projected to rise to USD 1,000 billion by 2040, McKinsey said in a report. In the report titled 'India: The next chemicals manufacturing hub', McKinsey said the country's chemical industry has been a global outperformer in demand growth and shareholder wealth creation over the last decade. "It now stands poised to play an increasingly dominant role across both consumption and manufacturing in the global arena," it said. The sector is projected to grow at 11-12 per cent during 2021-27 and 7-10 per cent during 2027-40 -- tripling its global market share by 2040.
