IAF's aerobatic prowess in Chennai steals hearts, five spectators die

A spectacular aerial display of the Indian Air Force aircraft over the skies of Marina Beach was a big draw here on Sunday, but at least five persons, who were among thousands of spectators, died due to causes including extreme exhaustion. A senior city police official said that one person died on the beachfront and four others in the vicinity and all the five were among the thousands who had gathered along the several kilometer long shoreline to witness the air show. Leader of Opposition and AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the DMK government for the incident and alleged it failed to properly make arrangements for such a significant event and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved. To witness the event, thousands of people stood in the scorching sun for atleast 2 to 3 hours and a lot of them held umbrellas to shield themselves. Samsung India workers observe one-day token fast near Chennai factory

Workers of Samsung India Electronics Ltd on Wednesday observed a token fast near the factory here on Wednesday, as part of intensifying their ongoing protest which entered the fourth week. Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) which is spearheading the protest by the employees said they would be meeting the Director of Factories in a day or two, alleging that the Korean electronic giant has roped in temporary workers to work in the shop floors in view of the strike. About 1,100 employees of Samsung India Electronics Ltd are on strike since September 9 pressing for various demands including wage revision and better work conditions. While several rounds of talks held in the presence of the labour department and company officials failed, another tripartite meeting has been planned for next week, CITU sources said. Chennai faces power outages, EB reroutes supply to restore electricity

Several parts of Chennai reeled under a sudden power outage due to a fire incident which caused sequential faults on both feeders at the Manali substation, here. Power supply was, however, restored by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), which responded promptly, by rerouting supply through alternate pathways, an official said on Friday. The cascading fault on the second redundant feeder Alamatty of Manali Substation caused damage to the switch structure, he said. The affected substation has been repaired on a war-footing and regular power supply has been restored, an official release here said. The Manali substation is an important power hub of Chennai supplying electricity to major parts of the city. There are two charger sources namely Alamatty and NCTPS II exclusively to supply power to this substation. These were designed to provide 100 per cent power to the sub-station. Chief Minister M K Stalin, who is on a US tour, called on officials of Ford Motor in Chicago and deliberated on the possibility of renewing the company's ties with Tamil Nadu, the state government said on Wednesday.
