A high turnout of 78 per cent was recorded in the first phase of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections across 20 constituencies on Tuesday, officials said. It was slightly higher than the voting percentage recorded in the first phase of 2018 state assembly polls covering 18 seats, which was 76.47 per cent. On Tuesday, polling was held in 20 constituencies of seven districts of the naxal-affected Bastar division and four districts of Durg division. Chhattisgarh recorded 78 per cent polling turnout in the first phase, the state's Chief Electoral Officer Reena Babasaheb Kangale said in a statement late in the evening. Overall 1.53 per cent increase in the turnout was recorded compared to 2018, she said. A provisional turnout of around 71 per cent was recorded in the first phase of Chhattisgarh assembly elections for 20 constituencies on Tuesday, voting for which was held in separate time slots, amid Naxalite violence and the call for boycott, officials said. Odisha tightened security at its border with Chhattisgarh, where polling will be held on Tuesday for the assembly elections, to check the movement of Maoists, officials said. Koraput's Superintendent Police Avinabh Sonkar on Monday said counter-insurgency operations have been started by the security forces, comprising the BSF, DVF (district voluntary force) and SOG (special operation group), in at least five strategic locations. Two polling personnel and a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan were injured on Monday in an IED blast triggered by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district a day ahead of the polling for the first phase of the assembly elections, police said. The incident occurred at around 4 pm when four polling parties escorted by security personnel were heading to their respective polling stations under Chhotebethiya police station limits, a police official said. A joint team of BSF and district police had set out from Marbeda camp escorting the polling teams to Rengaghati Rengagondi polling station, he said. Near Rengagondi, a pressure IED exploded, leaving two polling personnel and BSF constable Chandraparakash Seval injured, he said. The injured were shifted to Chhotebethiya hospital for treatment where their condition was said to be out of danger, he said. The rest of the polling teams have safely reached the Rengagondi polling booth which falls under the Antagarh assembly constituency.
