Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has said the pension for those who were detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during Emergency between 1975 and 1977 will be restored in the state. The pension scheme for detainees under MISA during Emergency, which was started in the state during the BJP rule in 2008, was withheld by the previous Congress government in 2019. MISA detainees (Lokantra Senani) were given pension ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 in three different categories. Speaking in the state assembly on Monday, Sai said the 'Samman Nidhi' (pension) for MISA detainees will be restarted. A Naxalite was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Saturday, a police official said. The face-off took place around 6 am in a forest near Burklanka village within the jurisdiction of Bheji police station during an anti-Naxal operation by the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran G Chavan told PTI. After the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a Naxalite along with a muzzle-loading gun was recovered from the spot, he said. Jails in Chhattisgarh are overcrowded as more than 18,000 inmates are lodged there against the existing capacity of 14,383, as per the figures shared by the state government. The state has five central, 20 district and eight sub jails, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, who also holds the home portfolio, stated in a written reply in the assembly on Thursday to a query from BJP MLA Sampat Agrawal. Twenty four of these jails, including all five central, 14 district and five sub jails, are overcrowded. In the remaining nine jails, inmates are less than their capacities, according to the figures. "As against the capacity of 14,383, there are 18,442 inmates lodged in the central, district and sub jails as on January 31 this year," the deputy CM said. The screening committee for shortlisting candidates for the Lok Sabha polls in Chhattisgarh met here on Sunday with AICC in-charge of the state Sachin Pilot asserting that winnability is the main criteria for the selection of nominees. The reason behind the I-T department's action was not immediately known. The state's Economic Offences Wing/Anti-Corruption Bureau recently lodged an FIR in an alleged coal levy scam based on a complaint of the Enforcement Directorate which had launched a probe into the scam during the previous Congress government. Amarjeet Bhagat, who was a minister in the previous Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government, is among the 35 accused named in the FIR. According to officials, the searches were underway since early Wednesday morning in different districts including Surguja, Raipur, Durg and Rajnandgaon.
