Preparing for SR dialogue, other meetings: India on next steps with China

Both India and China are preparing for the special representatives' dialogue and other meetings to deliberate on the next steps for the management of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), New Delhi said on Friday. The comments by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal came a day after India and China held talks under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border affairs in New Delhi. In their first diplomatic talks under the WMCC dialogue mechanism since withdrawing troops from two face-off points, India and China on Thursday reflected on the lessons learnt from the eastern Ladakh border row in order to prevent such conflicts in the future. Preparations are on for a meeting of the special representatives, Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing while replying to a question. "We also talked about the foreign secretary-level meeting. So once these meetings take place, we will be discussing the next steps, and then you

Taiwan's leader calls on China to avoid threats ahead of expected drills

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te called on China to open its arms rather than raise its fists as he wrapped up his first overseas tour since taking office in May. His remarks at a press conference Friday in Palau, a Pacific Island nation, came in response to widespread speculation that China will hold military drills around Taiwan in response to his trip. No matter how many military exercises and warships and aircraft are used to coerce neighbouring countries, they will not be able to win the respect of any country, he said. The president spoke a day after China's Foreign Ministry announced sanctions Thursday on 13 American companies and six executives in response to recently announced weapons sales to Taiwan. Taiwan and China split in 1949 during a civil war that saw the victorious communists take control in Beijing and the Nationalists setting up a rival government in Taiwan, an island of 23 million people about 160 kilometers off China's east coast. China's ban on high-tech materials could impact industries, economy

China has banned exports of key materials used to make a wide range of products, including smartphones, electric vehicles, radar systems and CT scanners, swiping back at Washington after it expanded export controls to include dozens of Chinese companies that make equipment used to produce advanced computer chips. Both sides say their controls are justified by national security concerns and both accuse the other of weaponising trade. Analysts say the latest restrictions could have a wide impact on manufacturing in many industries and supply chains. Critical mineral security is now intrinsically linked to the escalating tech trade war, Gracelin Baskaran and Meredith Schwartz of the Center for Strategic International Studies, wrote in a report on Beijing's decision. The full impact will depend partly on whether US industries can compensate for any loss of access to the strategically important materials, equipment and components. Here's why this could be a tipping point in trade confli

Trump appoints former Senator David Perdue as US ambassador to China

President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday he is choosing former Sen David Perdue of Georgia to be ambassador to China. Trump said in a social media post that Perdue, a former CEO, brings valuable expertise to help build our relationship with China. Perdue pushed Trump's debunked lies about electoral fraud during his failed bid for Georgia governor. Perdue lost his Senate seat to Democrat Jon Ossoff four years ago and ran unsuccessfully in a primary against Georgia Gov Brian Kemp. Economic tensions will be a big part of the US-China picture for the new administration. Trump has threatened to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office as part of his effort to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first executive orders. The Chinese Embassy in Washington cautioned earlier this wee

Number of billionaires in China falls to 427 following economic slowdown

The number of billionaires in China fell to 427 in 2024 from last year's 520 following the slowdown in the economy, Switzerland-based multi-investment bank UBS said on Thursday. The total wealth of these billionaires decreased by 20 per cent to about USD 1.4 trillion highlighting the impact of economic slowdown on the world's second largest economy on the once flourishing private sector. Plagued by the crisis in the property sector and turmoil in financial markets, the list of China's rich with assets of USD one billion shrank by 132 while 42 new billionaires were minted and three moved away, the UBS report said. Many of the billionaires we have in China are relatively new in the context of total wealth, said Benjamin Cavalli, head of strategic clients at UBS Global Wealth Management. Compared to other markets, such as the US or Europe, where the total wealth is on an average higher per billionaire, those in China are often hovering near USD one billion, Cavalli said. So, whenever

Taiwan, US territory Guam should defend freedom in region: Taiwan Prez Lai

Taiwan and Guam should work together to defend freedom and democracy in the region, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said Thursday on a visit to the American territory. Guam was Lai's second US stop on an ongoing tour of the Pacific islands, following a visit to Hawaii last weekend. China's authoritarian government claims Taiwan as its territory and says the self-governing island must come under its control at some point in the future. Lai, in a speech to Guam's legislature, emphasized the shared values and strategic importance of Taiwan and Guam in the Indo-Pacific region. "Let us together become the crucial force in defending freedom, democracy in the first island chain, he said, referring to a string of islands off the Asian continent that includes Japan, Taiwan and part of the Philippines. The legislature passed a resolution welcoming Lai and extending appreciation for Taiwan's "significant contributions to Guam's economy and community, Speaker Therese Terlaje said. Lai called fo

At least 8 US firms, dozens of nations impacted by China's hacking: WH

A top White House official on Wednesday said at least eight US telecom firms and dozens of nations have been impacted by a Chinese hacking campaign. Deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger offered the new details about the breadth of the sprawling Chinese hacking campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Neuberger divulged the scope of the hack a day after the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued guidance intended to help root out the hackers and prevent similar cyberespionage in the future. White House officials cautioned that number of telecommunication firms and countries impacted could still grow.

China losses force GM to take $5 bn restructuring charge, cut assets' value

The poor performance of General Motors' Chinese joint ventures is forcing the company to write down assets and take a restructuring charge totalling more than USD 5 billion in the fourth quarter of this year. The Detroit automaker said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that it will cut the value of its equity stake in the ventures by USD 2.6 billion to USD 2.9 billion when it reports its results early next year. In addition, GM will take USD 2.7 billion worth of restructuring charges, most of it during the fourth quarter. The noncash charges will reduce the company's net income, but they will not affect adjusted pretax earnings, GM said in the filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. GM for years has owned 50 per cent of its joint venture with SAIC General Motors Corp. and has other joint ventures, including a finance arm. The ventures used to be a reliable source of equity income for the company, but have swung to losses in the past year. The ventures lost USD 347 ..

China remains Pak's top bilateral creditor, share drops to 22%: World Bank

With almost USD 29 billion in loans, China continued to be Pakistan's largest bilateral creditor while Saudi Arabia emerged as the second largest bilateral lender with about USD 9.16 billion, a World Bank report has said. However, China's share in Pakistan's total external debt went down to 22 per cent compared to 25 per cent in 2023 with Saudi Arabia increasing its share from 2 per cent in 2023 to 7 per cent in 2024. The World Bank's International Debt Report 2024 released on Tuesday ranks Pakistan among the top three loan recipients from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this year and also notes that Pakistan's high debt-to-export and debt-to-revenue ratios indicate a weakening fiscal position. The International Debt Report 2024 put Pakistan's total external debt (including that from IMF) at USD 130.85 billion in 2023, accounting for 352 per cent of its total exports and 39 per cent of gross national income (GNI) while Pakistan's total external debt servicing amounted to 43 p
