Fears about Amazon, Microsoft cloud computing dominance trigger UK probe

Concerns from regulators about the dominance of Amazon and Microsoft in Britain's cloud computing market have triggered a investigation into the competitiveness of the key industry. The UK communications regulator Ofcom said Thursday that its yearlong study of the cloud communications services market found features that could limit competition. British businesses face barriers when they try to switch or use multiple cloud suppliers, it said. Cloud computing uses data centres around the world to store photos and emails or run software. It has become a vital service for many businesses, which turn to cloud providers to avoid the cost of buying expensive equipment and real estate to run their own data centres. Ofcom asked the UK antitrust watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, to take a closer look at the 7.5 billion-pound ($9 billion) cloud market. The watchdog said it was opening an in-depth investigation that's expected to wrap up by April 2025. Some UK businesses have to

Amid surge in cloud tech, Ensono MD says it is not for all workloads

Amid a surge in cloud technologies for enterprises and customer use cases, a senior executive of mainframe-as-a-service company Ensono said cloud is not meant for all workloads. India Managing Director of Ensono, Raj Bagga spoke to PTI as the company makes a foray into hybrid solutions for enterprise data. The government recently imposed restrictions on import of micro computers, large or mainframe computers, and certain data processing machines. Mainframe computers, informally called mainframe, are used by large organizations for bulk data processing for tasks such as censuses, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, and large-scale transaction processing - especially by large companies having sensitive information. Earlier, companies used to see the cloud only approach, moving 100 per cent to cloud, but that thinking is changing drastically. People are realizing that cloud is not for all the workloads and suitable for that, Bagga said. On mainframe techno

Amazon investing $7.8 bn more in Ohio-based cloud computing ops: Officials

Amazon's profitable cloud business will invest roughly USD 7.8 billion by the end of 2029 to expand its data centre operations in central Ohio, state leaders announced on Monday, further advancing the state's efforts to establish itself as the Midwest's technology hub. The new investments by Amazon Web Services, or AWS, were announced by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who leads the governor's technology office. The financial outlay further cements Ohio as the heart of our nation's technology and innovation, the governor said in a statement. AWS launched its first data centres in the region in 2016 and currently operates campuses in two counties in central Ohio, home to the capital city of Columbus. The administration said numerous locations are being considered as sites for the new data centres, in a selection to be announced later this year. The cloud computing company is now responsible for the second largest private sector investment in the state's history,

Amazon's cloud business slows as companies pull back on service, cut costs

When the pandemic hit three years ago, Amazon was one of the few businesses that thrived. Customers flocked to the online commerce site amid global lockdowns. But even when those lockdowns eventually lifted and Amazon's sales slowed as people returned to stores, the company could still count on its massive cash cow: Amazon Web Services. Now even the lucrative cloud services business is feeling pressure. Companies are trimming their expenses amid concerns about high inflation and fears that a recession might be around the corner. And many of them are being more cautious about their cloud costs, leading to a slowdown in one of Amazon's profitable businesses. The tech giant's first quarter earnings report showed its cloud unit generated USD 21.4 billion and was growing at 16 per cent in the first three months of this year much slower than the 37 per cent growth rate a year prior. It is under those circumstances that AWS will host its two-day security-focused cloud conference starti
