Adani Power reports 96% decline in profits, cites high coal import costs

Adani Power on Wednesday reported 96 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 8.77 crore for December quarter 2022-23 mainly on the back of higher expenses. In the year-ago period, the profit was Rs 218.49 crore, the company said in a BSE filing. Total expenses increased to Rs 8,078.31 crore in the quarter from Rs 5,389.24 crore. Total income rose to Rs 8,290.21 crore from Rs 5,593.58 crore in the same period a year ago. During the quarter, the company and its subsidiaries achieved an average Plant Load Factor (PLF or capacity utilisation) of 42.1 per cent and power sale volume of 11.8 Billion Units (BU), as compared to PLF of 41 per cent and power sale volume of 10.6 BU in Q3 FY22. Operating performance for Q3 FY23 includes the performance of the 1,200 MW power plant of Mahan Energen Ltd, which was acquired in March 2022. CIL dispatches over 152 MT of coal to power sector in Q1: Govt tells LS

State-owned CIL dispatched 152.49 million tonnes (MT) of coal to the power sector during April-June 2022, a year-on-year rise of 19 per cent, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. Coal India Limited (CIL) is the largest producer and supplier of the dry fuel in the country. "CIL has dispatched 152.49 MT of coal to Power Sector in the first quarter of the current fiscal surpassing all the previous highs of the same period and achieving a growth of 19 per cent over last year in the same period," Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a reply in the Lok Sabha. At 14.43 MT, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) dispatched 4.1 per cent higher coal to the power sector in the first quarter of the current fiscal. As per Central Electricity Authority (CEA), coal stock at power plants has improved from the level of 25.6 MT as on March 31, 2022 to 29.5 MT on July 26, 2022. Vedanta to buy Athena Chhattisgarh Power for Rs 564 crore

Vedanta Ltd on Thursday said it will acquire debt-ridden Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd for Rs 564.67 crore. Liquidation process for the company was initiated in March last year. The acquisition for a purchase price of Rs 564.67 crore is likely to be completed in the ongoing financial year, adding that the consideration will be in the form of cash. "Vedanta Limited to acquire 100 per cent of the paid-up capital of Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd," the metals and mining major said in a filing to BSE. The acquisition will fulfill the power requirement for Vedanta aluminium business and through vertical integration, add synergies by providing a cost advantage pertaining to power consumption. Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd has a 1,200 MW coal-based power plant located at Jhanjgir Champa district in Chhattisgarh. Athena was admitted under Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process on May 15, 2019. On May 13 last year, a bench of NCLT Hyderabad directed initiation of the liquidation process
