The Ministry of Shipping is expecting the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to submit a report on the issues in the coastal shipping and suggest remedies, by December, this year. The Government is also discussing with the Bangladesh government for a tie up to allow Indian cargo to go through the rivers in Bangladesh territory, to transport cargo from West Bengal to the North Eastern States like Tripura, said a senior official from the Ministry.Speaking to the reporters in the sidelines of CII Port Conclave 2018, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Kailash K Aggarwal, joint secretary of Ministry of Shipping, said, "We are trying to analyse various constrains commodity-wise. The Union ministry of shipping has sanctioned grants under the Sagarmala Coastal Berth Scheme for Jawaharlal Nehru port (JNP) at Navi Mumbai and Karwar port in Karnataka. The government of Karnataka will get Rs 50 crore for developing a breakwater at Karwar and JNP will Rs 25 crore to develop a coastal berth.The money will partially support Rs 385 crore of infrastructure projects in these ports. The one at JNP involves construction of a coastal berth and port craft jetty, reclamation and capital dredging. The estimated project cost is Rs 170 crore, to be complete by March 2019. The proposed berth is expected to handle 2.5 million tonnes of coastal traffic.The project at Karwar involves extension of the existing southern breakwater by 145 metres and construction of a north breakwater of 1,160 metres. The Union ministry of shipping aims to double the share of transportation of cargo through coastal shipping and inland water navigation by 2025 from six per cent under Sagarmala programme.Presently about 54 per cent of the cargo are transported through the roads, 33 per cent by rail, seven per cent by pipelines and six per cent by coastal shipping."In the total modal mix in India, coastal shipping accounts for six per cent. We aim to double it by 2025.
