Espresso coffee may prevent Alzheimer's symptoms, lab study finds

Compounds in espresso coffee may inhibit a process that is believed to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer's disease, according to early findings of a study conducted in lab. To make espresso coffee, hot water is forced through finely ground coffee beans, creating a concentrated extract. This is often used as a base for other drinks, including the trendy espresso martini. Recent research has suggested that coffee could also have beneficial effects against certain neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. In healthy people, tau proteins help stabilise structures in the brain, but when certain diseases develop, the proteins can clump together into fibrils -- a process that is believed to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer's. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, nalaysed if compounds in espresso could prevent tau aggregation in vitro. Researchers from the University of Verona in Italy pulled espresso shots from store-bought bea

Big catching up to do for new players, looking beyond metros: Barista CEO

Unfazed by the growing competition from new players as well as international chains, coffee house Barista is now looking beyond metro cities to expand its footprint and drive growth, according to its CEO Rajat Agrawal. From coffee giants Tim Hortons, Tata Starbucks, the recently opened 'Pret A Manger' to local coffee-related startups like Blue Tokai, Sleepy Owl and Rage Coffee, everyone seems to be betting big on the growing coffee culture in the traditionally tea-drinking nation. However, the Barista CEO says that there is a "large level of catch-up" that has to be done by new players as the country's second-largest integrated coffee house with a presence in over 100 cities is growing at a rapid pace. The homegrown coffee chain brand, which last month opened its 350th store in India in Udaipur (Rajasthan), also looks to reach the count of 500 stores in the coming two years. "Now that we are already 350th, we are much above or far in terms of our number of stores presence. We have

Coffee with milk may have anti-inflammatory effect, says researchers

A simple cup of coffee with milk may have an anti-inflammatory effect in humans, a study conducted in laboratory suggests. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark found that a combination of proteins and antioxidants doubles the anti-inflammatory properties in immune cells. Whenever bacteria, viruses and other foreign substances enter the body, our immune systems react by deploying white blood cells and chemical substances to protect us. This reaction, commonly known as inflammation, also occurs whenever we overload tendons and muscles and is characteristic of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Antioxidants known as polyphenols are found in humans, plants, fruits and vegetables. They are also known to be healthy for humans, as they help reduce oxidative stress in the body that gives rise to inflammation. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, analysed how polyphenols behave when combined with amino acids, the building blocks of ..
