Covid-19: Tamil Nadu adds 107 new infections, active caseload rises to 836

Tamil Nadu on Sunday added 107 new COVID-19 cases, including two returnees from the United States and Madhya Pradesh respectively, pushing the caseload to 34,56,083, the Health department said. The death toll remained unchanged at 38,025 with zero fatalities in the last 24 hours, a medical bulletin said. Chennai accounted for a majority of the fresh infections with 43. Kancheepuram reported 16 cases followed by Chengalpet (13), Tiruvallur (7), Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirapalli (six each), Erode and Kanyakumari (4) while Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Ranipet, Salem, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Vellore and Villupuram districts added one case each. 12 samples tested positive for BA4 and BA5 Omicron samples in Tamil Nadu

New Omicron variants BA4 and BA5 were detected from the samples collected in Tamil Nadu and the results from a lab in Hyderabad have revealed it, state Minister Ma Subramanian said on Sunday. The Minister for Medical and Family Welfare said 12 samples of the 150 samples were sent to the lab in Hyderabad which have confirmed the presence of the new variants marking the emergence of new coronavirus variants in the state. "As many as four people have been detected with BA4 variant while eight people have been diagnosed with BA5 variant. All of them are isolated. We are closely monitoring these 12 people. They are all doing fine," he told reporters. He said those secondary contacts who came in contact with the primary contacts were identified and are being monitored by the health officials.
