The Allahabad High Court has held that "irrational and indiscriminate arrests" are gross violation of human rights and arrest should be the last option restricted to "exceptional cases". Justice Siddhartha, during an anticipatory bail hearing against a man accused in a cow slaughter case, observed that arrests should only be carried out when custodial interrogation of the accused is required. Granting anticipatory bail to Mohammad Tabish Raza, the judge said, "After considering rival submissions, this court finds that there is a case registered or about to be registered against the applicant. It cannot be definitely said when the police may apprehend him. "After the lodging of FIR the arrest can be made by the police at will. Chhattisgarh cops invoke UAPA on two accused in 'Gau sevak' murder

The stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been invoked in connection with the murder of a cow shelter worker in Kabirdham in Chhattisgarh after a probe revealed suspicious activities of two accused, a police official said on Monday. Sadhram Yadav (48) was killed allegedly by six persons on January 20 night on the outskirts of Kawardha city when he was heading to his village Lalpur on a bicycle. All six were arrested later. After learning about suspicious activities of accused Ayaz Khan and Idris Khan, a provision of the UAPA was invoked in the case on Sunday, Kabirdham Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava said. Seers in Karnataka oppose repeal of anti-conversion, cow slaughter laws

Heads of various mutts in Dakshina Kannada district have strongly opposed the decision of the Karnataka government to repeal anti-conversion law and the cow slaughter prevention Act. The meeting of the seers condemned the recent statements by some ministers on the move to withdraw Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act and amend Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, Gurudevananda Swami of Odiyuru Mutt told reporters here on Friday. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said he will review the anti-cow slaughter law and amendments to the Land Reforms Act and the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Act. The chief minister was speaking to farmer leaders who called on him to convey their apprehensions about corporate agriculture, a government press release said. "Farmer leaders expressed concern that the small and marginal farmers, who constitute more than 85 per cent of the total agriculturists in the state, will be affected due to the Union government's decision to introduce corporate agriculture," the statement said. BJP leader cautions Karnataka govt on amending anti cow slaughter Act

Former minister and BJP leader Kota Srinivas Poojary MLC on Monday urged the Congress government in Karnataka not to make any changes to the cow slaughter prohibition Act which is in force in the state. Addressing reporters in Udupi, he said the Act has been passed in both houses of the legislature as per the will of the people and the government should consider the feelings of Hindus who worship cows. The Congress government should not think that they have all the powers as they have been voted to power. The BJP will strongly oppose any move to amend The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, Poojary said. Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have sought a ban on illegal killing of cows and camels on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha in the Union territory scheduled next week.
